Environmental controls on surf zone injuries on high-energy beaches [PDF]
The two primary causes of surf zone injuries (SZIs) worldwide, including fatal drowning and severe spinal injuries, are rip currents (rips) and shore-break waves. SZIs also result from surfing and bodyboarding activity.

Direct measurements of wind stress over the surf zone [PDF]
Field data of the wind stress over surf zone waves are presented from an open ocean beach on the East Australian Coast. Two ultrasonic anemometers were deployed at nominal heights of 5 and 10 m above the water surface in the intertidal and inner surf ...

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

The surf-zone diatom Asterionellopsis glacialis (Castracane) Round attains extremely high abundances (up to 109 cells l–1) and chl a concentrations (up to 1.5 mg chl a l–1), forming darkbrown patches in Cassino Beach, southern Brazil.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Surf-zone vortices over stepped topography
The problem of vortical motions in the surf zone is simplified by taking the bottom topography to be piecewise flat while allowing finite-height jumps in depth between flat regions.

Larval and juvenile fish assemblages in the sandy beach surf zones of Nanji Island, China
The Nanji Islands, a nationally protected marine reserve in China, support high biodiversity but face significant fishery resource depletion. This study aims to describe the community structure of larval and juvenile fishes in the surf zone, a critical ...

Wave Kinematics and Directionality in the Surf Zone
Measurements of surface elevations and internal velocities have been conducted in a natural surf zone. The results were used to investigate the quantitative performance of linear theory in predicting the wave kinematics from the surface elevations.

Identified through the use of statistical design of experiments and metallographic investigation, this study exposes the stochastic origins of intergranular cracks in blown powder laser beam directed energy deposition additive manufacturing of pure molybdenum. It further demonstrates a successful crack mitigation approach with direct correlation to the
