Non-monotonic Surface Charging Behavior of Platinum: A Paradigm Change

open access: yes, 2016
In electrochemical systems, metal surface charging phenomena dictate the strength of electrostatic interactions between the electrified electrode and ions in solution.

A Simplified Laminar Flow Model for the Pultrusion of Glass Fiber/Polyethylene Terephthalate Commingled Yarns

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A simplified thermoplastic pultrusion model is developed to predict thermal fields in glass fiber/polyethylene terephthalate (GF/PET) composites with reduced computational cost. By combining effective material homogenization, validation against literature data, and Gaussian‐process‐based optimization, the study reveals how heating limits, pulling speed,

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Satellite surface charging in LEO with ProPIC

open access: yes
ProPIC is a fully kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) solver developed for space electric propulsion. This work has extended its capabilities to simulate satellite surface charging and wake generation in low Earth orbit (LEO).

Charge transfer, surface charging, and overlayer-induced faceting

open access: yes, 2003
Local density functional calculations are used to analyze the change of surface energy of metallic surfaces upon surface charging. We then studied the systems involving overlayers of fcc metals on Mo(111) and Mo(211).

Isoelectric points of hydroxy double salts

open access: yesJCIS Open
Water-insoluble hydroxy double salts show pH-dependent surface-charging similar to that of metal oxides. While the pH-dependent surface-charging of metal oxides is very well-documented, the number of scientific papers reporting on the surface-charging of

Hydrogen‐Assisted Fracture of Iron‐Based Fe–Ni–Al Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Principal relations and fracture mechanisms of single‐phase and precipitate‐strengthened Fe–Ni–Al alloys subjected to prior electrochemical hydrogen charging are identified. The mechanisms of hydrogen effect on strength and microhardness are discussed, including hydrogen‐induced increase in microhardness and the role of hydrogen in fracture behavior ...

Numerical Simulations of Surface Charging at the Lunar Terminator

open access: yes, 2015
A full-particle particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation model is developed to perform fully-kinetic simulations of surface-plasma interactions at the lunar terminator region.

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Effects of Evolving Surface Contamination on Spacecraft Charging

open access: yes, 2000
The effects of evolving surface contamination on spacecraft charging have been investigated through (i) ground-based measurements of the change in electron emission properties of a conducting surface undergoing contamination and (ii) modeling of the ...
