A Review of the Physics of Ice Surface Friction and the Development of Ice Skating [PDF]

open access: yesResearch in Sports Medicine, 2014
Our walking and running movement patterns require friction between shoes and ground. The surface of ice is characterised by low friction in several naturally occurring conditions, and compromises our typical locomotion pattern. Ice skates take advantage of this slippery nature of ice; the first ice skates were made more than 4000 years ago, and ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Molecular Evolution of H2O:O2 Ices at Different Temperatures in Simulated Space Environments. I. Chemical Kinetics and Equilibrium

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We computationally investigated the chemical evolution of H _2 O:O _2 ices (6:1 ratio) under irradiation by cosmic-ray analogs (0.8 MeV H ^+ ) at 9, 50, and 100 K to understand the implications the chemical evolution of O _2 -containing ices in space ...

Suppression of lung adenocarcinoma migration through organelle alkalization by human lactoferrin – albumin fusion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This paper reveals how human lactoferrin–albumin fusion (hLF‐HSA) potently suppresses lung adenocarcinoma cell migration. hLF‐HSA upregulates NHE7, leading to Golgi alkalization, disruption of the Golgi secretome, downregulation of MMP1, and reversal of EMT. These findings suggest a novel Golgi‐targeting strategy to suppress cancer cell migration.

Implications of high-pressure oxygen hydrates on radiolytic oxygen in Jovian icy moons

open access: yesCommunications Chemistry
Various icy moons, such as Europa and Ganymede, have thin oxygen atmospheres and exhibit spectral features attributed to oxygen held in their surface ices. The oxygen forms from the radiolysis of water.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

ICES glossary of principal pressures in ICES ecoregions

open access: yes, 2016
Abrasion pressures relate to disturbance of the substrate at or below the surface of the seabed; aggregate and other mineral extraction is not covered by this pressure.

The Relative Cold-trapping Likelihood of Water on Airless Rocky Bodies

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
Many planetoids are airless, but despite the lack of a collisional atmosphere, these bodies can experience volatile migration toward the polar regions via the exosphere.

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for

Extensive gas bubble release in Norwegian spring spawning herring (Clupea harengus) during predator avoidance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Events of extensive gas bubble releases in overwintering Norwegian spring spawning herring (Clupea harengus) were repeatedly observed acoustically and visually in Vestfjorden, northem Norway, during attacks from killer whales (Orcinus orca) and saithe
