Settlement behavior of swimming algal spores on gradient surfaces

open access: yesBiointerphases, 2006
When surfaces possessing gradients of surface energy are incubated with motile spores from the green seaweed Ulva, the spores attach on the hydrophilic part of the gradient in larger numbers than they do on the hydrophobic part. This result is opposite to the behavior of the spores observed on the homogeneous hydrophobic and hydrophic surfaces.

Effects of Different Construction Sequences on Ground Surface Settlement and Displacement of Single Long Pile due to Twin Paralleled Shield Tunneling

open access: yesAdvance in Civil Engineering, 2021
Shield tunneling activities inevitably pass through pile foundations at close distance in densely urban areas. Various studies have investigated the interaction between newly constructed tunnels and existing pile foundations.

Experimental Investigation of the Performance of Buried Flexible Pipe in Reinforced Sand

open access: yesSlovak Journal of Civil Engineering, 2023
The experimental work of this study deals with the performance of pipe in sand with various responses subjected to incremental static loading where the backfill is reinforced with two types of reinforcement (geogrid and geocell) to investigate the ...

Soft computing approach for prediction of surface settlement induced by earth pressure balance shield tunneling

open access: yes, 2020
Estimating surface settlement induced by excavation construction is an indispensable task in tunneling, particularly for earth pressure balance (EPB) shield machines.

Three-Dimensional Probabilistic Analysis of the Surface Settlement Based on Spatial Variability of Soil Properties: Case Study Zarbalizadeh NATM Tunnel

open access: yesGeotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2021
The design and construction of a tunnel in urban areas need special considerations. Usually, the excessive settlement caused by tunnelling during the construction process damages the adjacent infrastructures and utilities, especially if the tunnel is ...

Research on the Influence of Shallow Buried Tunnel Crossing on the Stability of Overlying Frame Structure Building

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The land section of the Huangdao end of the Jiaozhou Bay Second Submarine Tunnel is extensively underlain by the Quaternary Loose Accumulation Layer. The tunnel passes through a weathered granite fracture zone with well-developed rock joints beneath the ...

Settlement of Macoma balthica larvae in response to benthic diatom films

open access: yes, 2009
The role of multi-species benthic diatom films (BDF) in the settlement of late pediveliger larvae of the bivalve Macoma balthica was investigated in still-water bioassays and multiple choice flume experiments.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.
