Recognising trade-offs between welfare and environmental outcomes in aquaculture will enable good decisions

open access: yesAquaculture Environment Interactions, 2022
As aquaculture expands, ensuring the sustainability of practices requires a focus on minimising environmental effects. At the same time, where fish are cultured, their welfare needs to be secured to ensure compliance with legislation and gain social ...

Photo‐Gated Corona Microfluidics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Photo‐gated corona microfluidics decouples optical programming from electric‐field actuation to enable reconfigurable manipulation on open, electrode‐pattern‐free surfaces. Near‐infrared irradiation locally melts paraffin, creating a reversible charge‐relaxation pathway that reconstructs the electric field.

Single‐Cell Transcriptomics and Metabolomics Reveal Glutamate Dehydrogenase as a Central Regulator of Nitrogen Metabolic Remodeling During Alkalinity Adaptation in Crustaceans

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Single‐cell transcriptomics reveals the cellular response of Macrobrachium hainanense to carbonate alkalinity stress. Alkalinity stress impairs branchial ammonia excretion, induces mitochondrial dysfunction, and drives cell‐type‐specific changes in gills and hemocytes.

Dose-dependent role of AMH and AMHR2 signaling in male differentiation and regulation of sex determination in Spotted knifejaw (Oplegnathus punctatus) with X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y chromosome system

open access: yesCell Communication and Signaling
Sex determination mechanisms vary significantly across different chromosomal systems and evolutionary contexts. Nonetheless, the regulatory framework governing the multi-sex chromosome system (X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y) remains enigmatic.

Impact of Alternative Feed Ingredients and Feeding Strategies on Growth, Muscle Morphology, and Fillet Quality of Genetically Selected Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) in a Long-Term Feeding Trial

open access: yesAnimals
Aquaculture advancement depends on alternative raw materials to reduce reliance on fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO) from extractive fisheries. Strategies like restricted feeding reduce costs and improve sustainability by minimizing feed waste and ...

Functional Sex Reversal in Adult Gonochoristic Teleosts is Mediated by Ovarian Germline Stem Cell Plasticity and Somatic Cell Transdifferentiation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Oocytes play crucial roles in maintaining ovarian fate in adult gonochoristic fish. Targeted oocyte ablation with aromatase inhibition triggers the activation of surviving germline stem cells and the transdifferentiation of somatic cells from granoulosa/theca to Sertoli/Leydig lineages, inducing a complete and functional female‐to‐male sex reversal ...

Impact of Novel Diets on the Distribution of Mucosal Immune Cells in the Digestive System of High-Growth Genetically Selected Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) in a Long-Term Feeding Trial

open access: yesFishes
An alternative fish feed (ALT) replacing 50% of the fishmeal with poultry byproduct meal and insect meal and total fish oil with microalgae, poultry, and salmon byproducts oils was tested for 300 days on 900 gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) with an ...

Rural Labor Supply and Economic Opportunities: Commuting, Migration, Tariffs, and Immigration

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Some rural counties remain dependent on agricultural or manufacturing jobs, but an increasing proportion have diversified economics. Rural counties also differ in their abilities to commute to an urban market characterized by higher wages and labor productivity.

Agricultural Diversification at the Margin. Strategies and Determinants in Italian Mountain and Remote Areas

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper explores the convergence in on‐farm diversification strategies of agricultural holdings, between remote areas and more central ones. Using Italian farm‐level data, we explore the determinants of diversification strategies across farms.

T3SS effector EseJ in Edwardsiella piscicida inhibits PANoptosis in macrophages

open access: yesCommunications Biology
Edwardsiella piscicida T3SS protein EseJ plays a dual role. As a regulator, EseJ suppresses type 1 fimbriae, inhibiting macrophage apoptosis stimulated by FimH. As an effector, it promotes E. piscicida replication in host cells.
