Swirl sign in intracerebral haemorrhage: definition, prevalence, reliability and prognostic value

open access: yesBMC Neurology, 2012
Background Swirl sign has previously been described in epidural hematomas as areas of low attenuation, radiolucency or irregular density. The aims of this study were to describe swirl sign in ICH, study its prevalence, study the reliability of the ...

Fuel combustor [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
A fuel combustor comprises a chamber with air and fuel inlets and a combination gas outlet. The fuel is supplied to a vaporization zone and fuel and air are mixed in a pair of mixing chambers, each exemplified by a swirl can.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

The Performance of an Air-Cooled Diesel Engine with a Variable Cross-Section Dual-Channel Swirl Chamber

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
In order to improve the performance of a mini-type air-cooled diesel engine in terms of the overall efficiency and engine emissions, a swirl chamber of a variable cross-section dual-channel model was developed.

RaMBat: Accurate identification of medulloblastoma subtypes from diverse data sources with severe batch effects

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
To integrate multiple transcriptomics data with severe batch effects for identifying MB subtypes, we developed a novel and accurate computational method named RaMBat, which leveraged subtype‐specific gene expression ranking information instead of absolute gene expression levels to address batch effects of diverse data sources.

Numerical study on the influence of pre-swirl angle on internal flow characteristics of centrifugal pumps

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2022
The effect of inlet pre-swirl on the performance of a centrifugal pump is studied by numerical simulation. The governing equations are Navier–Stokes equations and the shear stress transport k–ω turbulence model.

Flow and Performance of the Disk Cavity of a Marine Gas Turbine at Varying Nozzle Pressure and Low Rotation Speeds: A Numerical Investigation

open access: yesMachines, 2023
In marine gas turbines, variations in rotational speed occur all the time. To ensure adequate cooling effects on the turbine blades, the valves need to be adjusted to change the pressure upstream of the pre-swirl nozzle.

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Investigation of Flame Structure and PAHs’ Evolution in a Swirl-Stabilized Spray Flame at Elevated Pressure

open access: yesEnergies
Swirl spray combustion has attracted significant attention due to its common usage in gas turbines. However, the high pressure in many practical applications remains a major obstacle to the deep understanding of flame stability and pollutant formation ...

Mass transport using the series of vortex rings with swirl

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Science and Technology, 2014
Behavior of the series of laminar vortex rings with circumferential flow, so-called swirl, were investigated using flow visualization, to evaluate the transport efficiency of the ejected fluid as vortex rings.
