Environment and Symmetry Breaking in Quantum Field Theory

1991
In this communication we want to discuss the dynamical effects of the coupling between a quantum system and the environment in the framework of Quantum Field Theory (QFT).

Breaking Lorentz Symmetry in Quantum Field Theory

2005
Symmetry under the Lorentz group is a fundamental assumption of virtually any fundamental theory used to describe elementary particle physics. For instance, the standard model as well as many extensions including supersymmetry and grand unified theories preserve Lorentz symmetry.

Quantum theory of the micromaser: Symmetry breaking via off-diagonal atomic injection

Physical Review A, 1986
We propose and analyze an experiment in which atoms in a coherent superposition of atomic states are injected into a high-Q maser cavity. We show that the symmetry of the field in the cavity is ``broken'' in the same way as results from a classical signal injected into a laser cavity.

Self-Consistent Quantum Field Theory and Symmetry Breaking

1974
This lecture consists of two parts. In part I, we present a study of spontaneously broken symmetries in the terminology of quantum field theory. Though many of our results in this part help our physical and intuitive understanding of subjects and are also useful for practical computations, some of them are derived by means of certain approximations.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking: Quantum Statistical Mechanics versus Quantum Field Theory

Philosophy of Science, 2012
Philosophical analysis of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in particle physics has been hindered by the unavailability of rigorous formulations of models in quantum field theory (QFT). A strategy for addressing this problem is to use the rigorous models that have been constructed for SSB in quantum statistical mechanics (QSM) systems as a basis for ...

Covariant formulation of spontaneous symmetry breaking in chiral quantum field theory

Il Nuovo Cimento A, 1977
For the (SU2 ⊗SU2)-invariant model of Gursey a formulation is given in terms of a direct integral of Hilbert spaces. The structure of matrix elements, due to the spontaneous breakdown of the chiral symmetry is discussed.

Symmetry breaking due to quantum fluctuations in the massless λϕ4theory

Journal of Physics G: Nuclear Physics, 1982
It is shown that quantum fluctuations can act as the driving mechanism of instability leading to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the massless lambda phi 4 theory.
