Synthetic aperture radar demonstration kit for signal processing education [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A Synthetic Aperture Radar scale model has been developed to improve signal processing teaching. Based on low frequency ultrasound transmission, it is a low cost demonstration kit.

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Synthetic Speech Discrimination using Pitch Pattern Statistics Derived from Image Analysis

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper, we extend the work by Ogihara, et al. to discriminate between human and synthetic speech using features based on pitch patterns. As previously demonstrated, significant differences in pitch patterns between human and synthetic speech can ...

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Generating a Jump Distance Based Synthetic Disk Access Pattern

open access: yes, 2006
As part of our on-going research into improving the quality of synthetic, block-level I/O workloads, we have developed an algorithm that generates a synthetic (i.e., random) disk access pattern based on both (1) a given distribution of sectors accessed ...

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Principles of synthetic biology: a MOOC for an emerging field

open access: yes, 2020
Synthetic biology requires students and scientists to draw upon knowledge and expertise from many disciplines. While this diversity is one of the field’s primary strengths, it also makes it challenging for newcomers to acquire the background knowledge ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Noise propagation in synthetic gene circuits for metabolic control [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
International audienceDynamic control of enzyme expression can be an effective strategy to engineer robust metabolic pathways. It allows a synthetic pathway to self-regulate in response to changes in bioreactor conditions or the metabolic state of the ...
