Renal Changes in Cocaine Abuse and Addiction

open access: yesActa Medica Bulgarica, 2019
Cocaine is a natural alkaloid extracted from the leaves of the South American plant Erythroxylum coca or synthesized chemically. After cannabis, it is the second most frequently abused recreational substance worldwide. Cocaine can affect every tissue and

Effective Computation for Nonlinear Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Nonlinear dynamical and control systems are an important source of applications for theories of computation over the the real numbers, since these systems are usually to complicated to study analytically, but may be extremely sensitive to numerical error.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Long term impact of systemic bacterial infection on the cerebral vasculature and microglia

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Systemic infection leads to generation of inflammatory mediators that result in metabolic and behavioural changes. Repeated or chronic systemic inflammation leads to a state of innate immune tolerance: a protective mechanism against over ...

Fulminant toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis following intravitreal triamcinolone administration

open access: yesIndian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2012
We report two cases of fulminant toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis following intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) administration. Case 1: A 42-year-old female received IVTA for presumed non-infectious panuveitis. Within 2 months, she developed diffuse

Metabolic Systemic Effects Triiodothyronine

open access: yesАрхивъ внутренней медицины, 2020
Triiodothyronine (T3, 3,5,3’-L-triiodothyronine) is a thyroid hormone (thyroid), the secretion of which is carried out directly both by the gland (to a lesser extent) and outside it (the main amount; as a result of peripheral deiodination of thyroxine ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

The threat of systemic risk in banking: evidence for Europe [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper attempts to answer the question whether the threat of systemic risk in banking exists only on a national or on a European level. Following De Nicolo and Kwast (2001), mean rolling-window correlations between bank stock returns are used as a ...

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Systemic Risk in European Banking: Evidence from Bivariate GARCH Models [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper attempts to assess the Europe-wide systemic risk in banking. We employ a bivariate GARCH model to estimate conditional correlations between European bank stock indices.
