Mitochondrial capacities and quality control following short‐ and long‐term weight restoration after simulated anorexia nervosa

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by prolonged caloric restriction and skeletal muscle atrophy. Mitochondrial health is a key mediator of muscle function, yet the role of mitochondria during AN and following weight regain has not been investigated. The objective of this study was to evaluate mitochondrial capacities

Taurine Production by Metabolically Engineered Escherichia coli [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Taurine has been shown to be essential in various ways; mammalian development and clinical treatment. Mammals are able to synthesize taurine but most mammals have low activity levels of cysteine sulfinic acid decarboxylase (CSAD), which plays a key role ...

Plant‐protein supplementation improves thermoregulatory responses and ameliorates markers of intestinal damage during exercise in the heat

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Exercise in the heat often causes gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances, which can impair performance. Single amino acid supplementation can attenuate gut damage and enhance exercise tolerance; however, the effectiveness of innate amino acid blends from plant‐based proteins remains underexplored.

Substrate‐specific mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolomic profiles in type 2 diabetic rat hearts

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) greatly alters cardiac fuel handling, yet how mitochondrial function adapts to the diabetic substrate environment remains unclear. This study investigated substrate‐specific cardiac mitochondrial bioenergetics from a T2D rat model induced by a high‐fat diet and low‐dose streptozotocin.

Hyperglycaemia‐induced reactive oxygen species production in cardiac ventricular myocytes differs among mammals

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend In rat and human adult ventricular myocytes, acute hyperglyceaemia (Glucose) causes increased glucose uptake (via GLUT) leading to O‐GlcNAcylation of CaMKII at Ser280, such that CaMKII activates NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) to increase cytosolic reactive oxygen species (ROS). That perturbs the ROS to Antioxidant (AntiOx) balance.

The mitochondrial‐targeted antioxidant SkQ1 prevents skeletal muscle mitochondrial‐apoptotic but not necroptotic signalling during ovarian cancer

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend An evaluation of the degree to which mitochondrial hydrogen peroxide emission (mH2O2)‐mediated apoptotic and necroptotic signalling contributes to skeletal muscle atrophy in an orthotopic epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) model. To determine whether attenuating mH2O2 could prevent regulated cell death signalling and mitigate muscle

Taurine prevented cell cycle arrest and restored neurotrophic gene expression in arsenite-treated SH-SY5Y cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
[[abstract]]The study investigated the effect of taurine on cell viability and neurotrophic gene expression in arsenite-treated human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells.

Mitochondrial haplotype and sex modulate responses to endurance exercise training

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Using OKC‐HETB/W rats we demonstrate that mitochondrial haplotype influences training responses of endurance exercise. Overall OKC‐HETW rats showed greater responses than OKC‐HETB in exercise tolerance, mitochondrial bioenergetics, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation frequencies and motor co‐ordination.
