Nonlinear Saturation of Tearing Mode Islands

Physical Review Letters, 2005
New, rigorous results for the tearing island saturation problem are presented. These results are valid for the realistic case where the magnetic island structure is non-symmetric about the reconnection surface and the electron temperature, on which the electrical resistivity depends, is evolved self-consistently with the island growth.

Saturation of the tearing mode

The Physics of Fluids, 1977
A quasi-linear analytical model is used to describe the nonlinear growth and saturation of tearing modes with mode number m⩾2. The saturation of the magnetic island growth is the quasi-linear development of a single mode rather than a mode coupling process.

Neoclassical tearing modes

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2000
Neoclassical tearing modes are one of the most serious concerns for operation on a next-step tokamak device. The modes occur on present tokamaks at normalized pressure (beta (N)) values comparable to those envisaged For baseline scenarios in future devices, such as ITER-FEAT.

Tearing modes at the magnetopause

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1981
This paper examines the possible occurrence of tearing modes in the dayside magnetopause. First, the expected magnetic signature of tearing, as obtained from existing theory, is reviewed. Magnetometer data from one terrestrial magnetopause crossing and one crossing of Jupiter's magnetopause are then examined in detail.

Interaction of tearing modes

The Physics of Fluids, 1979
A fully developed tearing mode modifies the magnetic field profile. The effect of this profile modification on the linear growth rate of a different tearing mode in a slab and cylindrical geometry is investigated.

The nonlinear tearing mode

1984
A series of nonlinear computations of tearing-mode development have been performed which achieve higher values of the magnetic Reynolds number and larger wavelengths than previously considered. A prime candidate for the realization of dynamic reconnection is the resistive magnetic tearing mode, a spontaneous instability of a stressed magnetic field ...

Tearing modes at the magnetopause

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1996
It is shown that the shear flow present in the magnetopause current layer can destabilize the tearing modes depending upon the Mach number profiles. Using a variational principle, an heuristic stability criterion based on the form of the Mach number profile is obtained. This criterion could be used as a handy tool to search for tearing mode instability

Streaming Tearing Mode

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1985
The magnetohydrodynamic stability of streaming tearing mode is investigated numerically. A bulk plasma flow parallel to the antiparallel magnetic field lines and localized in the neutral sheet excites a streaming tearing mode more strongly than the usual tearing mode, particularly for the wavelength of the order of the neutral sheet width (or smaller),

Tearing Modes in Tokamaks

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008
This lecture gives a basic introduction to magnetic £elds, magnetic surface destruction, toroidal equilibrium and tearing modes in a tokamak, including the linear and nonlinear development of these modes and their modi£cation by current drive and bootstrap current, and sawtooth oscillations and disruptions.

Linear stability and mode structure of drift tearing modes

Physics of Plasmas, 2001
Ion viscosity and particle diffusivity effects on the linear stability and mode structure of drift-tearing modes are investigated. If only resistivity and diamagnetic effects are taken into account, the drift-tearing mode can exist only as a propagating wave packet, which is resolved numerically as an initial value problem.
