Nonlinear Stability of Drift-Tearing Modes
Physical Review Letters, 1985The nonlinear stability of drift-tearing modes in the presence of an electron temperature inhomogeneity is investigated. It is shown that linearly growing drift-tearing modes are rendered stable at a very small island width by quasilinear thermal effects.

Radial identification of tearing modes in a Tokamak
Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37510), 2004Abstract - The focus of the present research is the control of rotating magnetic islands of low helical mode numbers (m.n) in thermonuclear plasmas. These perturbations are associated with local distorsions of the current profile that can be a serious cause of degradation of the plasma confinement .

Vortex solutions for tearing modes have ben constructed in the slab model by solving MHD equations for a plasma bounded by vacuum. The vortices are nondipolar, nonlocalised and exist only for a specific type of behaviour of the shear given in the text. An approximate estimate has been made of the diffusion coefficient pertaining to such a mode.

Influence of Energetic Ions on Tearing Modes
Physical Review Letters, 2011In contrast with the stability effects of trapped energetic ions on tearing modes, the effects of circulating energetic ions (CEI) on tearing modes depend on the toroidal circulating direction, and are closely related to the momentum of energetic ions. CEI provide an additional source or sink of momentum to affect tearing modes.

Suppression of the tearing mode by energetic ions
Physical Review Letters, 1989The effect of an energetic ion population on the nonlinear stability of a tearing mode of single helicity is determined using kinetic theory. A dynamical equation is derived for the magnetic-island width. It is shown that the island growth can be suppressed in a tokamak when the energetic ion-density profile peaks just outside the rational surface ...

Interactions between neoclassical tearing modes
Nuclear Fusion, 2000Neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) with different mode numbers have been observed in tokamak plasmas. These NTMs, however, never occur simultaneously in ASDEX Upgrade. As a mode with a different helicity starts to grow, this usually leads to suppression of the first NTM.

Large mode-number tearing and twisting modes
The Physics of Fluids, 1979The radial width, w, of the boundary layer associated with tearing and twisting modes is always much smaller than equilibrium length scales. However, for the large mode number perturbations which seem particularly relevant to anomalous tokamak radial transport, the poloidal wavelength, k⊥−1, can become short enough to cast doubt on previous analyses ...

Unified theory of tearing modes
The Physics of Fluids, 1979A unified theory of tearing modes in slab geometry is presented. All known results are readily derived from our general dispersion relations. Several new results are derived and discussed, and the inter-relatonship between various tearing modes is established.

Collisionless m=1 tearing mode
Physical Review Letters, 1991The instability of a magnetically confined plasma against macroscopic modes is analyzed in collisionless regimes where magnetic reconnection occurs because of finite electron inertia and the ion gyroradius ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}_{\mathit{i}}$ replaces the skin depth d as the width of the mode boundary layer.

Drift-tearing modes in a tokamak plasma
Nuclear Fusion, 1978The drift-tearing instability for m ≥ 2 is re-examined, by using two-fluid equations in a cylindrical tokamak plasma. Strong deviations from the previously given analytic dispersion relation are found in the most interesting regime, ω* > γT, owing to a non-local structure of the drift mode.
