Hybrid-kinetic simulation of synergy between fishbone/sawtooth and tearing mode-induced energetic-ion transport in a tokamak plasma

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2023
The resonant interaction between $m/n = 2/1$ tearing mode (TM) and energetic ions redistributed by $m/n = 1/1$ fishbone/sawtooth collapse has been observed recently in HL-2A neutral beam injection-heated high-density plasmas, where m is the poloidal mode

Translophagy—A potential link between autophagy impairment and translational errors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterised by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and protein aggregates, but their origin often remains unknown. We propose that selective autophagy removes damaged protein‐making machinery, preventing errors during protein synthesis.

Investigating the role of edge neutrals in exciting tearing mode activity and achieving flat temperature profiles in LTX-β

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
We present observations, numerical simulations, and analysis from experiments in the Lithium Tokamak Experiment-Beta (LTX- β ) in which the electron temperature profile ( T _e ( r )) shifts from flat to peaked and a tearing mode is also destabilized when

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Conversion of the dominantly ideal perturbations into a tearing mode [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Forced magnetic reconnection is a topic of common interest in astrophysics, space science, and magnetic fusion research. The tearing mode formation process after sawtooth crashes implies the existence of this type of magnetic reconnection and is ...

Collisionless Tearing Instability in Relativistic Nonthermal Pair Plasma and Its Application to MHD Turbulence

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Collisionless tearing instability with a power-law distribution function in a relativistic pair plasma with a guide field is studied. When the current sheet is supported by plasma pressure, the tearing mode is suppressed as the particle spectrum hardens.

Delamination of laminate plate under tearing load mode

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2017
The paper presents the mixed mode delamination of laminate plate made of two sublaminates. To this purpose the load mode III of delamination is proposed as failure orthotropic model.

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

Non-linear dynamics of the double tearing mode

open access: yes, 2023
International audience3D non-linear magnetohydrodynamics simulations of a double tearing mode with the JOREK code are presented in the context of trying to better understand the benign termination of runaway electron beams observed in some experiments ...

Neoclassical tearing mode seeding by Alfvén eigenmode coupling in MAST-U

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
We present evidence of tearing mode seeding by nonlinear three-wave coupling of Alfvén eigenmodes in a tokamak plasma. Here, a m,n = 2,1 magnetic island appears to be seeded in a MAST-U discharge by coupling of $n = 2$ and $n = 3$ Alfvén eigenmodes ...
