Kinetic simulations of the coupling between current instabilities and reconnection in thin current sheets [PDF]
We investigate the coupling between current and tearing instability modes of a thin current sheet using the particle code GISMO. We identify pure tearing modes (kx≠ 0), instabilities in the current flow direction (ky≠ 0) and general 3D reconnection modes

Tearing mode stability in 1D and 2D [PDF]
Abstract A stability code for tearing modes in 1D and 2D straight equilibria in the tokamak scaling has been developed. It finds the lowest eigenvalues of a Hermitian problem which is obtained analytically by a reduction of the full problem. The main advantage is the powerful handling of equilibria with several resonant surfaces and displaying ...

Nonlinear evolution of the resistive tearing mode [PDF]
The nonlinear behavior of the tearing instability is investigated with numerical solutions of the resistive, incompressible, magnetohydrodynamic equations. Simulations have been completed for values of the Lundquist number S from 102 to 106 and wavelength parameter α=2πa/λ from 0.042 to 0.5.

Stability of short wavelength tearing and twisting modes [PDF]
The stability and mutual interaction of tearing and twisting modes in a torus is governed by matrices that generalize the well-known {Delta}{prime} stability index.

Control of Neoclassical Tearing Modes by Sawtooth Control [PDF]
The onset of a neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) depends on the existence of a large enough seed island. It is shown in the Joint European Torus that NTMs can be readily destabilized by long-period sawteeth, such as obtained by sawtooth stabilization from ion-cyclotron heating or current drive. This has important implications for burning plasma scenarios,

Nonlinear saturation of resistive tearing modes in a cylindrical tokamak with and without solving the dynamics [PDF]
We show that the saturation of resistive tearing modes in a cylindrical tokamak, as well as the corresponding island width, can be directly calculated with a magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equilibrium code without solving the dynamics and without considering

Tearing modes in a plasma with magnetic braiding [PDF]
We examine certain linear and nonlinear properties of macroscopic tearing modes driven by anomalous electron viscosity effects associated with magnetic braiding.

Neoclassical Tearing Modes [PDF]
Tearing modes often limit the performance of tokamak plasmas, because the magnetic islands which they generate lead to a loss of confinement, or even a disruption.

Tearing mode analysis in electron magnetohydrodynamics with pressure gradient
A two-dimensional three-component (2D/3C) electron magnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) model is implemented to investigate the linear behavior of collisionless tearing modes in slab geometry.

RESISTIVE MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMICS SIMULATIONS OF THE IDEAL TEARING MODE [PDF]
We study the linear and nonlinear evolution of the tearing instability on thin current sheets by means of two-dimensional numerical simulations, within the framework of compressible, resistive magnetohydrodynamics. In particular we analyze the behavior of current sheets whose inverse aspect ratio scales with the Lundquist number $S$ as $S^{-1/3}$. This
