Numerical simulation of thermal stress fluctuation at a mixing tee for thermal fatigue problems

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal, 2018
Thermal fatigue cracks have been found at mixing tees in nuclear power plants. The mixing flow of high and low temperature fluids causes temperature and stress fluctuations in the pipe wall and these result in fatigue crack initiation.

A fluctuation in surface temperature in historical context: reassessment and retrospective on the evidence

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2018
This work reviews the literature on an alleged global warming ‘pause’ in global mean surface temperature (GMST) to determine how it has been defined, what time intervals are used to characterise it, what data are used to measure it, and what methods used

Early-life thermal stress and mid-growth light intensity as key environmental predictors of lameness in commercial Cobb 500 broilers under tropical closed-house production systems [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary World
Background and Aim: Lameness is a major welfare and economic concern in fast-growing broiler chickens, particularly under tropical intensive production systems where environmental stressors are pronounced. Despite its multifactorial etiology, large-scale

A study on the possible usefulness of detrended fluctuation analysis of the electroencephalogram background activity in Alzheimer's disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We studied the EEG background activity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). DFA provides an estimation of the scaling information and long-range correlations in time series. We recorded the EEG in 11 AD patients

Dynamic Response of Phase Change Heat Exchange Unit with Layered Porous Media for Pulsed Electronic Equipment

open access: yesAerospace
Effective heat dissipation challenges transient high-power electronic devices in hypersonic vehicle cabins. This study introduces a Phase Change Heat Exchange Unit with Layered Porous Media (PCHEU–LPM) employing pulsed heat flow at the top and forced ...

Numerical evaluation of wall temperature measurement method developed to estimate thermal stress at T-junction pipe

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal, 2014
Thermal fatigue cracking may initiate at a T-junction pipe where high and low temperature fluids flow in from different directions and mix. Thermal stress is caused by a temperature gradient in a structure and by its variation.

Disturbance as a factor in breaking dormancy and enhancing invasiveness of African grasses in a Neotropical Savanna

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica, 2016
The Cerrado is threatened by wildfires and invasive species. We aimed to evaluate in laboratory conditions whether temperature fluctuation at the soil surface, resulting from the absence of vegetation due to fire, can affect the germination of Urochloa ...

Isothermal Storage Delays the Senescence of Post-Harvest Apple Fruit through the Regulation of Antioxidant Activity and Energy Metabolism

open access: yesFoods, 2023
The purpose of this work was to elucidate the influence of TF (5 ± 5 °C, and 5 ± 1 °C) and CT (5 ± 0.1 °C served as an isothermal state) storage environment on the antioxidant ability and energy metabolism in post-harvest apple fruit during storage ...

Accuracy versus speed in fluctuation-enhanced sensing

open access: yes, 2012
Fluctuation-enhanced sensing (FES) comprises the analysis of the stochastic component of the sensor signal and the utilization of the microscopic dynamics of the interaction between the agent and the sensor.

Understanding viscous magnetization of multidomain magnetite [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Viscous magnetization (VM) and viscous remanent magnetization (VRM) have been measured, as a function of temperature, between room temperature and the Curie temperature using a suite of well-characterized synthetic and natural multidomain (MD) magnetite ...
