Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Narrative Review on Therapies That Influence Inflammatory Responses During Extremely Premature Perinatal Respiratory Transition

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims and Methods Advances in neonatal care have extended borderline survival to 22–24 post‐conceptional weeks. Present review discusses approaches for prolonging short pregnancies and prevention of serious morbidities in extremely premature infants born before 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Peyer's Patches in the Terminal Ileum in Ulcerative Colitis: Magnifying Endoscopic Findings. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Peyer's patches (PPs), a major component of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, serve as important antigen entry sites in mucosal immunity. PPs may play a role in the extension of ulcerative colitis (UC) into the terminal ileum.

Differential segment‐specific signalling pathways for guanylate cyclase C‐activated anion secretion in murine ileocolon

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Purpose Guanylate cyclase‐C (GC‐C) is the receptor for endogenous (uro)guanylin peptides, bacterial toxins and pharmacological analogues. Receptor activation leads to intestinal fluid loss, but also activates an antiproliferative pathway and is a promising target in colorectal cancer therapy.

Extracellular fibrillar matrix architecture of human placental villi. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The spatial organisation of the extracellular fibrillar matrix of normal human placental villi at term can be directly visualised by scanning electron microscopy after 2N-NaOH maceration technique.

A Prospective Study of Villous Capillary Lesions in Complicated Pregnancies

open access: yesJournal of Pregnancy, 2014
The vascularity of placental tissue is dependent on various factors of which fetomaternal hypoxia plays a major role. Hypoxia can be of different types and each type influences the vascularity of the villi, especially terminal villi, in its own way.

Unveiling Gut Homeostasis Disruption in Sepsis: Towards an Integrated Mechanistic and Translational Roadmap

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Elucidating the contribution of gut‐organ axes will provide new insights for developing combined therapeutic strategies against sepsis‐associated multiple organ dysfunction. ABSTRACT Sepsis, a life‐threatening clinical syndrome precipitated by a maladaptive host response to infection, is associated with substantial morbidity and high mortality rates ...
