Nitroblue Tetrazolium Reduction in Lymphocytes
Journal of Leukocyte Biology, 1987Abstract Certain populations of lymphocytes have been shown to reduce tetrazolium salts, indicating that superoxide anion may be present in lymphocytes. These experiments were done to determine if nitroblue tetrazolium reduction by lymphocytes was due to the presence of superoxide anion.

The Nitroblue Tetrazolium Test in Lymphoma
American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1973The nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) dye test was performed in 25 cases of lymphoma. Four of six patients with active, untreated lymphoma and with no evidence of bacterial infection had positive NBT tests (more than 10% of neutrophils reduced the dye to formazan). One of these four patients had occasional negative tests.

Tetrazolium Salts and Formazans
Progress in Histochemistry and Cytochemistry, 1976The history of the tetrazolium salts and formazans goes back 100 years, to when Friese (1875) reacted benzene diazonium nitrate with nitromethane, to produce a cherry-red "Neue Verbindung". This was the first formazan. 19 years later, Von Pechmann and Runge (1894) oxidised a formazan to produce the first tetrazolium salt.

The Nitroblue Tetrazolium Test in Tuberculosis
American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1974Of 43 patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis, 44% had positive NBT tests. The NBT test in seven cases reverted to negative with antituberculous therapy. Alcoholism, diabetes mellitus, and prior steroid administration did not affect the test.

Nitroblue tetrazolium test in neonates
The Journal of Pediatrics, 1978THE NITROBLUE TETRAZOLIUM test was introduced by Parks et al 1 in 1968 as an aid in the diagnosis of acute bacterial infection. Its use is based on the observation that neutrophil reduction of NBT to an intracellular formazan precipitate is increased under conditions of bacterial infection.
