Seafood cross-contamination by tetrodotoxin (TTX): management of an unusual route of exposure

Journal of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, 2023
In this study, liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectroscopy was applied to detect Tetrodotoxin and analogues (TTXs) on pufferfish (Sphoeroides marmoratus) tissues, accidentally found in the stomach of a cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). The cuttlefish tissues were also analysed.

Acute cardiovascular, antiarrhythmic and toxic effects of tetrodotoxin (TTX) in unanesthetized dogs

Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, 1972
Abstract Five unanesthetized dogs were given iv doses of 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4 and 4.8 μg/kg of TTX infused over 5 min periods at 65 min intervals. In similar experiments 4 anesthetized dogs were given serial doses of saline. Emesis occurred in 3 or 4 dogs after each dose of TTX, and the highest dose produced respiratory arrest and death in 4 of the 5 ...

Mechanism of Action of Tetrodotoxin (TTX) and Saxitoxin (STX)

1971
Marine toxins such as TTX and STX have aroused the interest of physiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, and biological warfare people, as well as writers of spy and mystery stories. In the hands of the neuroscientist they have been turned into helpful instruments vital for the study of nerve function and excitable membranes.

Effect of tetrodotoxin (TTX) on some brain neurotransmitters in rats.

Journal of natural toxins, 2002
Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent marine neurotoxin named after the order of fish from which it is most commonly associated, the Tetraodontiforms, or the tetraodon pufferfish. In the present study the crude TTX was extracted from pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus collected from the Red Sea in Egypt.

Asymmetric Fos labeling in lobule X of the cerebellum following transtympanic tetrodotoxin (TTX) in the rat

Neuroscience Letters, 2003
Unilateral transtympanic administration of the sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin (75 microl of 3 mM TTX in 0.1 M citrate buffer, pH 5.0) produced behavioral symptoms indicative of unilateral vestibular disruption. Following survival times of 2 and 24 h immunocytochemistry for Fos revealed asymmetric labeling in the granular and molecular layers of ...
