Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Thermal-Aware Design Space Exploration of 3-D Systolic ML Accelerators

open access: yesIEEE Journal on Exploratory Solid-State Computational Devices and Circuits, 2021
Machine learning (ML) accelerators have a broad spectrum of use cases that pose different requirements on accelerator design for latency, energy, and area. In the case of systolic array-based ML accelerators, this puts different constraints on processing

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Surface and intradermal temperature responses of adults to ambient heat stress with and without cooling

open access: yesPhysiological Reports
Accurate measurement of skin temperature is crucial to understanding responses to heat. We tested the hypothesis that intradermal temperature would differ from skin surface temperature during ambient heating with and without fan and water spray (24°C ...

ALMA Thermal Observations of Europa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We present four daytime thermal images of Europa taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. Together, these images comprise the first spatially resolved thermal dataset with complete coverage of Europa's surface. The resulting brightness temperatures

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

Remote Sensing Energy Balance Model for the Assessment of Crop Evapotranspiration and Water Status in an Almond Rootstock Collection

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2021
One of the objectives of many studies conducted by breeding programs is to characterize and select rootstocks well-adapted to drought conditions. In recent years, field high-throughput phenotyping methods have been developed to characterize plant traits ...

Lattice thermal conductivity of disordered NiPd and NiPt alloys

open access: yes, 2006
Numerical calculations of lattice thermal conductivity are reported for the binary alloys NiPd and NiPt. The present work is a continuation of an earlier paper by us [PRB, 72, 214207 (2005)]which had developed a theoretical framework for the calculation ...

Locality of temperature in spin chains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In traditional thermodynamics, temperature is a local quantity: a subsystem of a large thermal system is in a thermal state at the same temperature as the original system. For strongly interacting systems, however, the locality of temperature breaks down.
