Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

Ablation Mechanism of AlSiB-C/C Composites under an Oxy-Acetylene Torch

open access: yesMetals, 2023
In order to improve the ablation resistance of C/C composites, an AlSiB alloy (mass ratio of Al/Si/B = 2:4:1) was used as a dissipative agent to fill the pores of a C/C composites matrix by reactive melt infiltration to prepare AlSiB-C/C composites.

Spectral imaging of thermal damage induced during microwave ablation in the liver [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Induction of thermal damage to tissue through delivery of microwave energy is frequently applied in surgery to destroy diseased tissue such as cancer cells.

Dammarenediol II enhances etoposide‐induced apoptosis by targeting O‐GlcNAc transferase and Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling in liver cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Etoposide induces DNA damage, activating p53‐dependent apoptosis via caspase‐3/7, which cleaves PARP1. Dammarenediol II enhances this apoptotic pathway by suppressing O‐GlcNAc transferase activity, further decreasing O‐GlcNAcylation. The reduction in O‐GlcNAc levels boosts p53‐driven apoptosis and influences the Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling pathway ...

Representing moisture fluxes and phase changes in glacier debris cover using a reservoir approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Due to the complexity of treating moisture in supraglacial debris, surface energy balance models to date have neglected moisture infiltration and phase changes in the debris layer.

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Advances and Challenges of Local Thermal Ablation in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

open access: yesChinese Journal of Lung Cancer, 2020
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common pathological type of primary lung cancer. Currently, main treatment approaches for NSCLC patients include surgical resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and so on.

Radiofrequency ablation for liver tumors abutting complex blood vessel structures: treatment protocol optimization using response surface method and computer modeling

open access: yesInternational Journal of Hyperthermia, 2022
Objective To achieve a result of a large tumor ablation volume with minimal thermal damage to the surrounding blood vessels by designing a few clinically-adjustable operating parameters in radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for liver tumors abutting complex ...

Thermal Ablation of Lung Tumors: Focus on Microwave Ablation [PDF]

open access: yesRöFo - Fortschritte auf dem Gebiet der Röntgenstrahlen und der bildgebenden Verfahren, 2017
Background Image-guided thermal ablation can be used for the treatment of medically inoperable primary and metastatic lung cancer. These techniques are based on the heating up or freezing (cryoablation) of a volume of tissue around a percutaneous applicator that induces necrosis of the tumor.
