High precision but systematic offset in a standing bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) compared with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)

open access: yesBMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) provides a practical method of body composition estimation for field research and weight management programmes, with devices and algorithms that have improved in recent years. We compared suitability of a commercial

High-performance thermal interface technology overview [PDF]

open access: yes2007 13th International Workshop on Thermal Investigation of ICs and Systems (THERMINIC), 2007
An overview on recent developments in thermal interfaces is given with a focus on a novel thermal interface technology that allows the formation of 2-3 times thinner bondlines with strongly improved thermal properties at lower assembly pressures. This is achieved using nested hierarchical surface channels to control the particle stacking with highly ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Thermal performance of radiative cooling panels [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 1983
Abstract The performance of panels which cool by.means of thermal infrared heat transfer to the sky is calculated from basic principles. The efficiency of a radiative cooling panel is defined. Computer calculations with the full heat transfer equations are performed for horizontal surfaces with infrared-transparent covers.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Energy efficiency of social housing existing buildings – a portuguese case study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The European energy performance building regulations, Directive 2002/91/EC - Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) of the European Parliament and Council, require that new buildings present minimum standards of energy efficiency. Accordingly

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Thermal properties of La2Zr2O7 double-layer thermal barrier coatings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
La2Zr2O7 is a promising thermal barrier coating (TBC) material. In this work, La2Zr2O7 and 8YSZ-layered TBC systems were fabricated. Thermal properties such as thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion were investigated.

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Impact of passive cooling techniques on the thermal behavior of residential buildings in hot and arid regions -An experimental study-

open access: yesJournal of Building Materials and Structures, 2018
The thermal performance of the roof is one of the most important factors for a comfortable environment. As 50% of the thermal loads received by a building come from the roof, this research seeks to find the roofing system that opposes the transmission of
