From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Comparative Profiling of Hot and Cold Brew Coffee Flavor Using Chromatographic and Sensory Approaches

open access: yesFoods, 2022
Coffee brewing is a complex process from roasted coffee bean to beverage, playing an important role in coffee flavor quality. In this study, the effects of hot and cold brewing on the flavor profile of coffee were comprehensively investigated on the ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Thermal spray processing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
Thermal spray processing has been used for a number of years to cost-effecticely apply TBC's for a wide range of heat engine applications. In particular, bond coats are applied by plasma spray and HVOF techniques and partially-stabilized zirconia top ...

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Solidification Simulation of Al-Si Alloys with Dendrite Tip Undercooling

open access: yesMetals, 2022
A novel solution approach is proposed for the numerical simulation of the solidification process of binary Al-Si hypoeutectic alloys during upward and downward solidification modes.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

High pressure processing of whole soymilk: Effect on allergenicity, anti-nutritional factor, lipoxygenase activity and E-nose-aroma characteristics

open access: yesFood Chemistry Advances, 2023
Soymilk was subjected to high pressure processing (HPP) at different pressure levels (300–600 MPa) and time (5, 15 and 25 min) intervals. After the HPP treatment, a mild reduction was observed in soymilk pH and conductivity values; however, a sudden ...

Application of high pressure processing in ensuring food safety

open access: yes, 2022
As being one of the most popular non-thermal food processing and hurdle technologies, high pressure processing (HPP) is widely used to assure food safety and obtain food matrices with high nutritional value and longer shelf life.

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.
