Neuropeptides and thirst

Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, 1983
A number of neuropeptides have been found to affect fluid intake when injected directly into the brain of various vertebrate species. These include: angiotensin II and its peptide precursors; the tachykinins Substance P, eledoisin and physalaemin; the opioid peptides met- and leu-enkephalin and beta-endorphin; bombesin; neurotensin; and vasopressin ...

Thirst‐induced anorexias and the ontogeny of thirst in the rat

Developmental Psychobiology, 1988
AbstractIn previous work (Leshem, M., Boggan, B., and Epstein, A.N. (1988). The ontogeny of drinking evoked by activation of brain angiotensin in the rat pup. Dev. Psychobiol. Vol. 21, pp. 63–75) we showed that thirst elicited by activation of the brain's renin‐angiotensin system in the suckling becomes specific to water after 16 days of age.

Angiotensin and thirst

Trends in Neurosciences, 1978

More recently angiotensin ha~" been shown to be .~ powerful stimulus to thirst. It now appears that angiotensin is act.~ally localized in neur, nes in certait; regions of the central nerrous system.

Unfulfilled Thirst

Political journalist William Greider recalls his relationship with Larry Goodwyn, who taught him that democracy is possible, not more than that, and only if people learn how to organize themselves and demand it from the powerful forces that dominate their lives. Faith in the democratic idea requires the long view of history, Goodwyn shared.

Role of angiotensin in thirst

Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1977
Angiotensin is a potent dipsogenic substance and causes elevated water intake in some pathological conditions but as yet no physiological role for angiotensin in normal thirst has been proven. If angiotensin is important in normal drinking, then it should contribute to the drinking which follows water deprivation.

Thirst and sodium appetite

Endeavour, 1980
Abstract The survival of animals depends on the maintenance of a sufficient volume of extracellular fluid with an adequate sodium content. To meet this requirement the body has mechanisms that regulate both thirst and sodium appetite, and in these the octapeptide hormone angiotensin II may play an important role.
