Synergistic perspectives—How single‐molecule biophysics complement biochemical understanding

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how ensemble biochemistry and single‐molecule approaches are complementary, outline commonly used single‐molecule techniques, and illustrate their relevance through two representative case studies: chromatin organization by SMC complexes and pathway choice during DNA double‐strand break repair.

Spatial Evolution Analysis of Tailings Flow from Tailings Dam Failure Based on MacCormack-TVD

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Adopting an appropriate method to analyze the spatial evolution process of tailings flow after tailings dam failure can provide a rational assessment of the inundation range and evaluate the subsequent disaster.

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...

A Virtual Paleolithic: Assays in Photogrammetric Three-Dimensional Modelling.

open access: yesPaleoAnthropology, 2008
Access to Paleolithic artifact collections is often constrained due to the cost of travel, governmental restrictions, and the rare nature of unique specimens.

Is it really necessary to use complex methods for silting estimation in reservoirs?

open access: yesRBRH
The study aimed to evaluate whether primary hydrosedimentometric monitoring data would be sufficient to estimate the total siltation of the Pimental Reservoir (Belo Monte HPP) or whether more complex methods would be required.

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Accuracy of 3D geodetic model for trench-based paleoseismology: A case study from the Gelenbe fault zone

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Remote Sensing
In recent years, the rapidly advancing Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology has become an important tool in geosciences, particularly in paleoseismology, due to its ability to provide highly accurate topographic data.

Three-dimensional geological modelling of igneous intrusions in LoopStructural v1.5.10 [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development
Over the last 2 decades, there have been significant advances in the 3D modelling of geological structures via the incorporation of geological knowledge into the model algorithms. These methods take advantage of different structural data types and do not
