Opinion piece: A call to unite in a common cause

open access: yesJournal of Learning Development in Higher Education, 2009
This opinion piece argues that despite the successes of the Learning Development network, and the learning development community, separate development of this community may also have some dangers.

Tumor mutational burden as a determinant of metastatic dissemination patterns

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of genomic data to elucidate whether metastasis in certain organs share genetic characteristics regardless of cancer type. No robust mutational patterns were identified across different metastatic locations and cancer types.

Intersections between Law and Language: Disciplinary Concepts in Second Language Legal Literacy

open access: yesStudies in Logic, Grammar and Rhetoric, 2016
International mobility among graduate students of law presents unique challenges for the teaching and learning of Legal English. Master of Laws (LL.M.) students, for example, often bring both prior legal training and professional experience from their ...

Operationalising a Threshold Concept in Economics: A Pilot Study Using Multiple Choice Questions on Opportunity Cost [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper addresses the emerging educational framework that envisions threshold concepts as mediators of learning outcomes. While the threshold concepts framework is highly appealing on a theoretical level, few researchers have attempted to measure ...

An electronics Threshold-Concept Inventory: Assessment in the face of the dependency of concepts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The Theory of Threshold Concepts (TCs), first articulated by Land and Meyer in 2003, provides educators in many disciplines with a tool to identify those special ideas that both define the characteristic ways of thinking of expert practitioners, and ...

RaMBat: Accurate identification of medulloblastoma subtypes from diverse data sources with severe batch effects

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
To integrate multiple transcriptomics data with severe batch effects for identifying MB subtypes, we developed a novel and accurate computational method named RaMBat, which leveraged subtype‐specific gene expression ranking information instead of absolute gene expression levels to address batch effects of diverse data sources.

Spin-Glass Theory for Pedestrians

open access: yes, 2005
In these notes the main theoretical concepts and techniques in the field of mean-field spin-glasses are reviewed in a compact and pedagogical way, for the benefit of the graduate and undergraduate student. One particular spin-glass model is analyzed (the

Subtype‐specific enhancer RNAs define transcriptional regulators and prognosis in breast cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed machine learning methodologies to perform the subtype‐specific classification of RNA‐seq data sets, which are mapped on enhancers from TCGA‐derived breast cancer patients. Their integration with gene expression (referred to as ProxCReAM eRNAs) and chromatin accessibility profiles has the potential to identify lineage‐specific and ...

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Dopaminergic Regulation of Neuronal Circuits in Prefrontal Cortex [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Neuromodulators, like dopamine, have considerable influence on the\ud processing capabilities of neural networks. \ud This has for instance been shown in the working memory functions\ud of prefrontal cortex, which may be regulated by altering the\ud ...
