Impact of age at first visit on glycolipid metabolism, bone metabolism, and fertility potential in patients with Klinefelter syndrome

open access: yesAndrology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Classic Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is characterized by one extra X chromosome (47, XXY), leading to hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and higher risk of alterations in glycolipid homeostasis, cardiovascular diseases, and low bone mineral density. Most frequently, KS is diagnosed in adulthood because of infertility.

Metabolic bariatric surgery generates substantial, sustained weight loss and health improvement in a real‐world setting

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Community level national registry‐based observational study involving 122 567 participants. Total body weight loss at 5‐years post‐surgery 34.9% for people who underwent one anastomosis gastric bypass, 30.7% for roux‐en‐y gastric bypass, 26.5% for sleeve gastrectomy and 17.6% for adjustable gastric bands. Rate of defined adverse events at 90‐days 3.6%.

Early use of non‐vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants after cardiac surgery compared with warfarin for postoperative atrial fibrillation

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
With the increasing use of NOAC and the availability of reversal agents, there remains sparse evidence regarding its use in POAF. The use of a NOAC in patients with POAF did not appear to increase short‐term postoperative complications, including bleeding, stroke, readmission rates and mortality, compared with warfarin.

Emergency delivery in case of suspected placenta accreta spectrum: Can it be predicted?

open access: yesActa Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, EarlyView.
By analyzing independent risk factors for emergency deliveries within the IS‐PAS database cohort, a multivariate predictive model was created, in which antenatal vaginal bleeding and placental location away from the cesarean scar are the strongest factors.

Uptake of orally administered tranexamic acid in women during active labor: A pilot intervention study on prophylactic treatment of postpartum hemorrhage

open access: yesActa Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, EarlyView.
Women in active labor given oral tranexamic acid do reach therapeutic plasma concentrations. Time to therapeutic concentration is longer compared with intravenous administration, but duration in the therapeutic interval is significantly longer. Abstract Introduction Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide.

Design of a Soft Robotic Artificial Cardiac Wall

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background In cardiovascular engineering, the recent introduction of soft robotic technologies sheds new light on the future of implantable cardiac devices, enabling the replication of complex bioinspired architectures and motions. To support human heart function, assistive devices and total artificial hearts have been developed.

Ultrasound Assessment of Venous and Pulmonary Congestion in Left Ventricular Assist Devices Patients

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Renal venous stasis index (RVI) of Doppler renal ultrasound index is the peripheral vein ultrasound associated with high right atrial pressure, and right displacement of the interatrial septum is the echocardiographic parameter associated with high pulmonary wedge pressure.

Clinical Results for Cardiovascular Xenografts Treated With Novel Anticalcification Protocols

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the safety, efficacy, and clinical performance of the tissue‐engineered Periborn bovine pericardial scaffold treated with our novel anticalcification protocols for surgical repair of a variety of cardiovascular diseases. The overall probability of freedom from Periborn‐related reoperation was 95.4% ± 3.2% at 9 years.

Evaluating the impact of general practice pharmacist‐led person‐centred medicines reviews on medicines appropriateness and patient‐reported outcome measures

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of pharmacist‐led person‐centred medicines reviews in general practices on medicines appropriateness, polypharmacy indicators (high‐risk prescribing markers), and patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs).
