An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Analysis of The Black Fairy by Fenton Johnson [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This essay examines a rare early twentieth-century children’s story about and geared towards African Americans: “The Black Fairy” by Fenton Johnson. “The Black Fairy” was published in The Upward Path (1920), an anthology designed as a “Reader for Colored

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Nonstationary Stochastic Simulation of Strong Ground-Motion Time Histories : Application to the Japanese Database [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
For earthquake-resistant design, engineering seismologists employ time-history analysis for nonlinear simulations. The nonstationary stochastic method previously developed by Pousse et al. (2006) has been updated.

Time-History Analysis of Frictionally Damped Structures

open access: yes, 2011
During major seismic actions, a significant amount of energy is induced to structures. The means by which this energy is dissipated, determines the level of structural degradation. Special emphasis is placed on avoiding loss of human lives due to the earthquake action.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Things change: Women’s and men’s marital disruption dynamics in Italy during a time of social transformations, 1970-2003 [PDF]

open access: yes
We study women’s and men’s marital disruption in Italy between 1970 and 2003. By applying an event-history analysis to the 2003 Italian variant of the Generations and Gender Survey we found that the spread of marital disruption started among middle ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Seismic Design and Risk Analyses of Safe-to-Fail Steel and RC Frames for Nuclear Facilities

open access: yesJurnal Teknik Sipil
In this article, the design and estimate of the collapse risk of safe-to-fail steel and reinforced concrete (RC) frames due to earthquakes were proposed. The frames are part of nuclear facility buildings, and their failures are to follow the safe-to-fail

Empirical Delay Time Distributions of Type Ia Supernovae From The Extended GOODS/HST Supernova Survey

open access: yes, 2010
Using the Hubble Space Telescope ACS imaging of the GOODS North and South fields during Cycles 11, 12, and 13, we derive empirical constraints on the delay-time distribution function for type Ia supernovae.
