The Maize ZmbHLH118 Transcription Factor Regulates Vacuolar Nitrate Loading by the NO3− Transporter ZmCLCa

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In maize, the bHLH transcription factor ZmbHLH118 directly binds to the promoter of ZmCLCa and inhibits its expression. Tonoplast‐localized ZmCLCa mediates NO3− influx into the vacuole to regulate intracellular NO3− homeostasis, modulating nitrate uptake and metabolism, plant growth, and grain yield.

Comparison of biomarkers of exposure among US adult smokers, users of electronic nicotine delivery systems, dual users and nonusers, 2018–2019

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
The harm caused by cigarette smoking is overwhelmingly due to byproducts of tobacco combustion. Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) provide nicotine to users without combustion, and may support tobacco harm reduction among cigarette smokers who ...

PVNCRF Neurons Regulate Migraine‐Like Allodynia by Activating CRFR2 on Spinal Trigeminal Caudalis Glutamatergic Neurons

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Paraventricular CRF neurons in the hypothalamus project to glutamatergic neurons of the spinal trigeminal caudal nucleus, enhancing neuronal activation and CRFR2 signaling. This pathway increases CRF release and excitatory drive, promoting central sensitization and migraine‐related behaviors. Targeting the PVN–SP5C circuit provides a potential strategy

Navigating the digital frontier during the COVID‐19 pandemic and EVALI epidemic: The impact of social media on public health

open access: yesPublic Health Challenges
This commentary explores how social media influenced public health narratives and responses during two recent health crises, the COVID‐19 global pandemic and the e‐cigarette or vaping product use–associated lung injury (EVALI) epidemic. In the context of

Light me up: power and expertise in risk communication and policy-making in the e-cigarette health debates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This paper presents a detailed account of policy-making in a contemporary risk communication arena, where strong power dynamics are at play that have hitherto lacked theoretical analysis and empirical validation.

Pierceable, Water‐Resistant, and Transparent Nanofilm Electrodes Comprising Carbon Nanotubes for Long‐Term Monitoring of Plant Electrophysiology

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ultra‐flexible electrodes composed of single‐walled carbon nanotubes on a polymeric substrate exhibit excellent transparency, water resistance, and conformability to hairy surfaces. These non‐invasive nanofilms are easily pierced by trichomes, overcoming the structural barriers in plant electrophysiology.

Maize Anther Development Involves Translated Open Reading Frames From 3′ Untranslated Regions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study examined the translation activity across ten stages of maize anther development, integrating transcriptome and small‐peptide data. It linked mutations in translated 3' ORFs to anther sterility, exemplified by Zm00001eb417050_3' ORF (known as APV1). In addition, the data indicated that maize anthers could assimilate CO2 through the stomata in

Patient–physician communication regarding electronic cigarettes

open access: yesPreventive Medicine Reports, 2015
Introduction: Smokers are likely asking their physicians about the safety of e-cigarettes and their potential role as a cessation tool; however, the research literature on this communication is scant.

A Novel GmSIN1‐GmRNF1a‐GmCSN5a Module Determines Soybean Salt Tolerance and Yield Under Saline Soil Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Soybean production is severely threatened by salt stress. This study reveals that the GmSIN1‐GmRNF1a‐GmCSN5a module enhances salt tolerance by stabilizing the GmSIN1 protein. GmRNF1a acts as an E3 ligase to ubiquitinate GmSIN1 for degradation, a process inhibited by GmCSN5a.
