Tuta absoluta Meyrick is a microlepidopteran known in the scientific literature as the tomato leaf miner. It originates from South America, most likely from Peru, dating back to the 1960s, from where it spread to all continents: in Africa (Morocco and Algeria, 2008), from where it disseminated across the continent, causing catastrophic damage ...

Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology
Chlorantraniliprole (CAP) is applied worldwide for the control of caterpillars (Lepidoptera). However, with the overuse of CAP, the resistance problem in pest control is becoming increasingly serious. Recent studies have indicated a central role of the gut symbiont in insect pest resistance to pesticides and these may apply to the tomato leaf miner ...

Peripheral Coding of Sex Pheromones in the Tomato Leaf Miner, Phthorimaea absoluta (Meyrick)
Journal of Agricultural and Food ChemistryPhthorimaea absoluta releases (E3,Z8,Z11)-tetradeca-3,8,11-trienyl acetate (E3,Z8,Z11-14:OAc) and (E3,Z8)-tetradeca-3,8-dienyl acetate (E3,Z8-14:OAc) with a ratio of 90:10 as the sex pheromone. However, how this pest uses pheromone receptors (PRs) to detect the two pheromone components is unknown. Here, we functionally characterize the PR repertoire of

Leaf miner threatens tomato growing in Europe (Crop protection)
2009In February this year, entomologists of the Dutch Plant Protection Service determined a moth found at a Dutch tomato packaging facility to be Tuta absoluta. This moth is very harmful to tomato and can also live on crops such as aubergine, sweet pepper and potato. Originally from Chile, the insect appears to spread rapidly over Europe.
