Hypokalaemic quadriparesis following torsemide and spironolactone use

The National Medical Journal of India, 2018
Mild hypokalaemia is a common electrolyte abnormality following therapeutic doses of diuretics such as torsemide. If undiagnosed and untreated, hypokalaemia progresses and smooth muscle, skeletal muscle and the heart are affected. Potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone are commonly added to loop diuretics to prevent symptomatic hypokalaemia.

The pharmacokinetics of intravenous and oral torsemide in patients with chronic renal insufficiency

Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 1994
Torsemide is a diuretic that acts in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. Unlike furosemide, it undergoes substantial hepatic elimination and should not accumulate in patients with renal insufficiency. Therefore the pharmacokinetics of intravenous and oral torsemide and its metabolites were investigated in patients with chronic renal ...

Torsemide in Edema Associated with Chronic Kidney Disease

Journal of The Association of Physicians of India
Torsemide is a loop diuretic used to manage edema associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI). It acts by inhibiting sodium and chloride ions reabsorption in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle, thereby increasing urine output and reducing fluid accumulation.

Torsemide as a Primary Choice in Edema Associated with Heart Failure

Journal of The Association of Physicians of India
Heart failure (HF) is the fastest-growing disease with a higher fatality rate. The most differentiating feature of HF is pulmonary or peripheral edema, which is characterized by a gradient between intravascular and extravascular pressure. Loop diuretics were chosen as the primary treatment for edema associated with HF due to their efficacy and early ...

Fixed-dose Combination of Torsemide and Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonists

Journal of The Association of Physicians of India
The combination of torsemide and spironolactone presents a promising approach to managing conditions such as edema and hypertension. Torsemide, a loop diuretic, enhances diuresis by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the kidneys, while spironolactone, a potassium-sparing diuretic and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA), complements this effect ...

In Brief: A New Torsemide Formulation (Soaanz) for Edema

The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics
The FDA has approved Soaanz (Sarfez), a new formulation of the loop diuretic torsemide, for treatment of edema associated with heart failure or renal disease in adults. Torsemide has been available generically for years for treatment of hypertension and treatment of edema due to heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease.
