C-Reactive Protein Values and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rates after Total Hip and Total Knee Arthroplasty [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of International Medical Research, 2001
We studied the changes in serum C-reactive protein levels (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rates (ESR) in patients with primary osteoarthritis, who underwent uncomplicated arthroplasty. Of the 28 patients studied, 12 had cementless total hip replacement (THR), and 16 underwent cemented total knee replacement (TKR) with a tourniquet.

The influence of macrofaunal burrow spacing and diffusive scaling on sedimentary nitrification and denitrification: An experimental simulation and model approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The influence of burrow spacing on nitrification and denitrification was simulated experimentally using sediment plugs of different thicknesses immersed in aerated seawater reservoirs.

The role of histone modifications in transcription regulation upon DNA damage

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review discusses the critical role of histone modifications in regulating gene expression during the DNA damage response (DDR). By modulating chromatin structure and recruiting repair factors, these post‐translational modifications fine‐tune transcriptional programmes to maintain genomic stability.

Substrate specificity of Burkholderia pseudomallei multidrug transporters is influenced by the hydrophilic patch in the substrate‐binding pocket

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Multidrug transporters BpeB and BpeF from the Gram‐negative pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei have a hydrophilic patch in their substrate‐binding pocket. Drug susceptibility tests and growth curve analyses using an Escherichia coli recombinant expression system revealed that the hydrophilic patches of BpeB and BpeF are involved in the substrate ...

Comparison between Calculation and Measurement of Total Sediment Load: Application to Streams of NE Greece

open access: yesGeosciences, 2022
Sediment transport and stream discharge are two of the natural procedures which affect the hydromorphological profile of a watercourse. Measurements of water discharge, bed load transport rate and suspended sediment concentration were conducted in ...

2DV modelling of sediment transport processes over full-scale ripples in regular asymmetric oscillatory flow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Wave-induced, steep vortex ripples are ubiquitous features in shallow coastal seas and it is therefore important to fully understand and model the sediment transport processes that occur over them.

Mechanisms of parasite‐mediated disruption of brain vessels

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Parasites can affect the blood vessels of the brain, often causing serious neurological problems. This review explains how different parasites interact with and disrupt these vessels, what this means for brain health, and why these processes matter. Understanding these mechanisms may help us develop better ways to prevent or treat brain infections in ...

Bacterial community compositions of crab intestine, surrounding water, and sediment in two different feeding modes of Eriocheir sinensis

open access: yesAquaculture Reports, 2020
The aim of this study was to reveal the relationship between bacterial communities in the intestine of the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis and in the surrounding environment, and to compare these bacterial communities in two different feeding ...

Sediment management and the renewability of floodplain clay for structural ceramics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The Netherlands has vast resources of clay that are exploited for the fabrication of structural ceramic products such as bricks and roof tiles. Most clay is extracted from the so-called embanked floodplains along the rivers Rhine and Meuse, areas that ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...
