Argumentation-Based Reasoning in BDI Agents Using Toulmin's Model
2018 7th Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems (BRACIS), 2018The theory of argumentation spans several fields of knowledge, gaining significant space in the community of multiagent systems because it gives support for agents to reason about uncertain beliefs. This work describes the development of an argumentation-based inference architecture for BDI agents, which was developed based on Toulmin's model of ...

A Computational Approach for Generating Toulmin Model Argumentation
Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Argumentation Mining, 2015Automatic generation of arguments is an important task that can be useful for many applications. For instance, the ability to generate coherent arguments during a debate can be useful when determining strengths of supporting evidence. However, with limited technologies that automatically generate arguments, the development of computational models for ...

Toulmin's Model and the Solving of Ill-Structured Problems
Argumentation, 2005Toulmin’s (1958) model of argument was employed in the analysis of verbal protocols obtained during the solving of ill-structured problems. The participants were experts in the domain under study. For the analysis the Toulmin model was extended in order to enable description of lines of argument found in protocols as long as 10 paragraphs.

In The Uses of Argument (1958), Stephen Toulmin introduces his argumentation model. The central question in this book is which norms must be applied in evaluating argumentation. According to Toulmin, the logical criterion of formal validity is not adequate for the evaluation of arguments in everyday language because it does not take into account the ...

A Language Oriented Extension to Toulmin’s Argumentation Model for Conceptual Modelling
2014The constructive step of modelling must account for the specific requirements of various stakeholders. Further, the quality of a model in terms of goodness-of-fit, completeness or other aspects may vary, because of future, as yet unknown, requirements.

Contextualizing Toulmin's Model in the Writing Classroom
Written Communication, 2002Although Toulmin models of argumentation are pervasive in composition textbooks, research on the model's use in writing classrooms has been scarce'typically limited to evaluating how students' essays align with the model's elements (claim, data, warrant, qualifier, rebuttal, backing) construed as objective standards.
