Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Formation and Magnetic Properties of Transition Metal Atomic Chains on Monolayer MoS2 Grain Boundaries: A First-Principles Study

open access: yesNanomaterials
Magnetic one-dimensional nanostructures show great potential in spintronics and can be used as basic building blocks for magnetic materials and devices with multiple functions. In this study, transition group atomic chains (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) are

Monoclinic and Correlated Metal Phase in VO_2 as Evidence of the Mott Transition: Coherent Phonon Analysis

open access: yes, 2006
In femtosecond pump-probe measurements, the appearance of coherent phonon oscillations at 4.5 THz and 6.0 THz indicating the rutile metal phase of VO_2 does not occur simultaneously with the first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) near 68^oC.

Metal-Insulator Transition and Lattice Instability of Paramagnetic V2O3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We determine the electronic structure and phase stability of paramagnetic V$_2$O$_3$ at the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator phase transition, by employing a combination of an ab initio method for calculating band structures with dynamical mean-field theory.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

True Superconductivity in a 2D "Superconducting-Insulating" System

open access: yes, 2000
We present results on disordered amorphous films which are expected to undergo a field-tuned Superconductor-Insulator Transition. Based on low-field data and I-V characteristics, we find evidence of a low temperature Metal-to-Superconductor transition ...

Electric Field Induced Collapse of Charge-Ordered Phase in Manganites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The colossal electroresistance in manganites is a concomitant of the electric field induced insulator-to-metal phase transition. A phenomenological phase transition model is proposed to study this electric field induced collapse of charge-ordered phase ...

Oligocyclopentadienyl Transition Metal Complexes [PDF]

open access: yesSynlett, 2002
Synthesis, characterization, and reactivity studies of oligocyclopentadienyl transition metal complexes, namely those of fulvalene, tercyclopentadienyl, quatercyclopentadienyl, and pentacyclopentadienyl(cyclopentadienyl) are the subject of this account. Thermal-, photo-, and redox chemistries of homo- and heteropolynuclear complexes are described.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.
