Redox Evolution of Li-Rich Layered Cathode Materials

open access: yesBatteries, 2022
Li-rich layered oxides utilizing reversible oxygen redox are promising cathodes for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, they exhibit different electrochemical profiles before and after oxygen redox activation.

Radiative Contributions Dominate Plasmon Broadening for Post-Transition Metals in the Ultraviolet

open access: yes, 2021
We use classical electrodynamics calculations to investigate the plasmonic properties of the post-transition metals Al, Bi, Ga, In, and Sn, which are active in the ultraviolet, focusing in particular on the material- and resonance-dependent origins of ...

The Metallic Bond for Monolayer Transition Metal Layers on Transition Metal Surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
This present work discusses changes in the electronic and chemical properties of some transition metal layers on transition metal substrates, and presents a simple framework for understanding the results.

An engineered palette of metal ion quenchable fluorescent proteins. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Many fluorescent proteins have been created to act as genetically encoded biosensors. With these sensors, changes in fluorescence report on chemical states in living cells.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Calculation of the thermodynamic effect of the Brewer-Engel generalized acid-base reactions of 1:1 intermetallics for non-transition metals Al and Mg with transition metals

open access: yes, 1997
The Brewer-Engel theory has previously provided quantitative predictions of thermodynamic properties and crystal structures of metallic systems which have not previously been subject to generalized Lewis acid-base interactions (L. Brewer, in J.L. Walter,

Formation of Core-Shell Nanoparticles Composed of Magnetite and Samarium Oxide in Magnetospirillum magneticum Strain RSS-1. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) synthesize magnetosomes composed of membrane-enveloped magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4) particles in the cells. Recently, several studies have shown some possibilities of controlling the biomineralization process and ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
