Solving the Upconing Pumping Problem and Hydrodynamic Dispersion in Coastal Unconfined Aquifers [PDF]

open access: yesPort Said Engineering Research Journal, 2014
In the present study, the salt-water up coning problem in coastal unconfined aquifers is investigated. The dimensional analysis is used to provide information about the optimum well depth and the optimum pumping rate for a well suggested to be partially ...

Reflectivity of the 410-km discontinuity from PP and SS precursors

open access: yes
A number of studies have confirmed the global existence of a transition zone discontinuity at 410 km depth by aligning large numbers of long-period seismograms on a surface reflection phase before stacking.

A Prospective Study of Individuals at Risk of Multiple Sclerosis Informs the Design of Primary Prevention Studies

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective In multiple sclerosis, the optimal time for deploying a therapeutic intervention is before the central nervous system is damaged; given the success of trials treating the earliest stage of MS, the radiologically isolated syndrome, developing primary prevention strategies is an important next challenge.

TET2 gene mutation status associated with poor prognosis of transition zone prostate cancer: a retrospective cohort study based on whole exome sequencing and machine learning models

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
BackgroundProstate cancer (PCa) in the transition zone (TZ) is uncommon and often poses challenges for early diagnosis, but its genomic determinants and therapeutic vulnerabilities remain poorly characterized.MethodsTumor mutational landscape was ...

Global transition zone tomography

open access: yes, 2004
Our understanding of large-scale mantle dynamics depends on accurate models of seismic velocity variation in the upper mantle transition zone (400-1000 km depth).

Normal‐Appearing White Matter Injury Mediates Chronic Deep Venous Hypoxia and Disease Progression in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To explore how cerebral hypoxia and Normal‐Appearing White Matter (NAWM) integrity affect MS lesion burden and clinical course. Methods Seventy‐nine MS patients, including 13 clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients and 66 relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients, and 44 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from ...

Dual-heterostructure-enabled mechanical property enhancement and coordinated deformation mechanisms in laminated Mg composite alloys

open access: yesMaterials Research Letters
A laminated Mg-Zn/Mg–Ca composite sheet with dual heterostructures have been fabricated via accumulative roll bonding and annealing. This architecture introduces heterogeneities in both grain sizes and textures.

A Time Series Model for an Exchange Rate in a Target Zone with Applications [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper we introduce a flexible target zone model that is capable of characterizing the dynamic behaviour of an exchange rate implied by the original target zone model of Krugman (1991) and its modifications. Our framework also enables the modeller

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.
