Dispersion and damping of zone-boundary magnons in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor CePt3Si

open access: yes, 2011
Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is employed to study damped spin-wave excitations in the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si along the antiferromagnetic Brillouin-zone boundary in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Interaction of surface water and groundwater in Nida valley, Poland [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Water and Land Development
The study area of the Nida valley was examined to investigate variations in groundwater and surface water levels, as well as the interaction between them. In the valley, there were three branches.

Ichthyoplankton community structure and comparative trophodynamics in an estuarine transition zone [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Surveys were conducted to evaluate and compare assemblage structure and trophodynamics of ichthyoplankton, and their variability, in an estuarine transition zone.

Relationship Between Neurologic Symptoms and Signs and FMR1 Genotype in Premutation Carriers

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Fragile X‐associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS) is the most severe late‐onset condition caused by a premutation in the FMR1 gene, characterized by expanded CGG triplet repeats of 55–200. Clinical presentations of FXTAS, including gait ataxia, kinetic tremor, cognitive decline, and rare Parkinsonism, are linked to ...

Generalized Extreme Value Statistics for Scaling Oil Recovery from Water-Wet and Mixed-Wet Carbonate Rock

open access: yesEnergies
Counter-current, spontaneous imbibition of brine into oil-saturated rocks is a critical process for recovery of bypassed oil in carbonate reservoirs. However, the classic Amott-cell test introduces experimental artifacts that distort the true dynamics of

Development of Innovative Method of Steel Surface Hardening by a Combined Chemical-thermal Treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The aim of the article is a hardening of the surface steel layers due to the combination treatment. Samples of steel 38Cr2MoAl were hardened by complex chemical and thermal treatment such as carburizing and subsequent boriding.

Shear-transformation-zone theory of plastic deformation near the glass transition

open access: yes, 2007
The shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of plastic deformation in glass-forming materials is reformulated in light of recent progress in understanding the roles played the effective disorder temperature and entropy flow in nonequilibrium situations. A

Predictive Ability of Plasma p‐tau217 for β‐Amyloid Status: A Prospective Multicenter Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Plasma tau phosphorylated at threonine 217 (p‐tau217) measured with fully automated platforms has shown high accuracy for Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis, but real‐world multicenter data remain limited. We aimed to validate the diagnostic performance of p‐tau217 for identifying AD pathology in a real‐world multicenter cohort ...

Genealogical approaches to the temporal origins of the Central American gap: Speciation and divergence in Pacific Chthamalus (Sessilia: Chthamalidae)

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2013
A large section of the tropical Eastern Pacific coastline is nearly devoid of reef or consolidated habitat, and is known as the Central American Gap as it is associated with a biogeographic transition in fish and invertebrate species.
