The role of cellular signalling pathways and translation initiation factors in Herpesvirus infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
As obligate intracellular parasites, viruses rely on host cells to replicate. Hsv-1 is a large double stranded DNA virus which is the cause of common cold sores and corneal blindness in humans. The defining feature of HSV-1 is its ability to exist in two

Synaptic Plasticity and Translation Initiation [PDF]

open access: yesLearning & Memory, 2004
It is widely accepted that protein synthesis, including local protein synthesis at synapses, is required for several forms of synaptic plasticity. Local protein synthesis enables synapses to control synaptic strength independent of the cell body via rapid protein production from pre-existing mRNA.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Comprehensive profiling of translation initiation in influenza virus infected cells.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2019
Translation can initiate at alternate, non-canonical start codons in response to stressful stimuli in mammalian cells. Recent studies suggest that viral infection and anti-viral responses alter sites of translation initiation, and in some cases, lead to ...

Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 4H Is under Transcriptional Control of p65/NF-κB.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Protein synthesis is mainly regulated at the initiation step, allowing the fast, reversible and spatial control of gene expression. Initiation of protein synthesis requires at least 13 translation initiation factors to assemble the 80S ribosomal ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

The Role of Translation Initiation Regulation in Haematopoiesis [PDF]

open access: yesComparative and Functional Genomics, 2012
Organisation of RNAs into functional subgroups that are translated in response to extrinsic and intrinsic factors underlines a relatively unexplored gene expression modulation that drives cell fate in the same manner as regulation of the transcriptome by transcription factors.

Recent Advances in Archaeal Translation Initiation

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Translation initiation (TI) allows accurate selection of the initiation codon on a messenger RNA (mRNA) and defines the reading frame. In all domains of life, translation initiation generally occurs within a macromolecular complex made up of the small ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Mathematical and Computational Modelling of Ribosomal Movement and Protein Synthesis: an overview [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Translation or protein synthesis consists of a complex system of chemical reactions, which ultimately result in decoding of the mRNA and the production of a protein.
