Effect of Broad‐Spectrum Antibiotic Prophylaxis on Post‐Pancreatoduodenectomy Infectious Complications: Nationwide Inpatient Database Study in Japan

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Using a nationwide Japanese inpatient database, we evaluated whether broad‐spectrum antibiotic prophylaxis improves postoperative outcomes after pancreatoduodenectomy compared with narrow‐spectrum antibiotics. In propensity score–weighted analyses of 45 099 patients, broad‐spectrum prophylaxis was associated with significantly lower rates of intra ...

Climate‐Driven Tree Mortality Alters the Timing and Magnitude of Forest Carbon Uptake in the Conterminous United States

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Earth's forests are major carbon sinks that slow human‐driven climate change, yet climate‐sensitive disturbances are increasing tree mortality and altering carbon cycling.

Assessing Earthquake-Induced Tree Mortality in Temperate Forest Ecosystems: A Case Study from Wenchuan, China

open access: yes, 2016
Earthquakes can produce significant tree mortality, and consequently affect regional carbon dynamics. Unfortunately, detailed studies quantifying the influence of earthquake on forest mortality are currently rare. The committed forest biomass carbon loss

Can Machine Learning Reduce Unnecessary Surgeries? A Retrospective Analysis Using Threshold Optimization to Prevent Negative Appendectomies in Adults

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Threshold‐optimized machine learning models using routine clinical and laboratory data in 623 adults undergoing appendectomy. Logistic regression (AUC = 0.765) and random forest (AUC = 0.785) were the best‐performing models for appendicitis detection and complicated appendicitis prediction, respectively.

Subsurface storage capacity controls on tree ring sensitivity to precipitation

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Communications
Tree growth sensitivity to precipitation varies dramatically across Mediterranean climate regions, but the mechanisms controlling this variation remain poorly understood.

Blue oak seedling age influences growth and mortality

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 2007
In some California locations, the natural regeneration of blue oak is limited by the ability of small seedlings to survive long enough to become larger saplings.

Bronchoscopy Robot with Enhanced Flexibility and Stability via Multi‐Segment Variable Stiffness Catheter

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This work presents a magnetic bronchoscopy robot with a novel multi‐segment variable stiffness catheter. This catheter can not only move flexibly in the narrow bronchi but also harden according to the need to provide support. Combined with remote wireless magnetic field drive, it provides a more precise and effective solution for biopsy of deep lung ...

High‐elevation endemic plants predicted to lose habitat from changing climate in Washington State

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise High‐elevation plants face unique challenges from potential climate change impacts that will likely require upslope migration into increasingly smaller suitable habitat. This situation is particularly acute for endemic species that by definition occupy small geographic ranges.

Site factors and stand conditions associated with Persian oak decline in Zagros mountain forests

open access: yesForest Systems, 2018
Aim of study: Drought and stand structure are major and interconnected drivers of forest dynamics. Water shortage and tree-to-tree competition may interact under the current climate change scenario, increasing tree mortality.
