From Disease to Illness: Reframing Periodontitis Through an Anthropological Lens

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Periodontitis is at once a disease, an illness, and a sickness—where biological pathology, lived experience, and social meaning intersect. The proposed integrated model links upstream structural actions with downstream clinical and educational practices through feedback loops that promote equitable and effective prevention and care.

Multi‐Omics Signatures of Periodontitis and Periodontal Therapy on the Oral and Gut Microbiome

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
This multi‐omics study integrates shotgun metagenomics and NMR metabolomics to reveal coordinated microbial and metabolic signatures of periodontitis across the oral–gut axis. Non‐surgical periodontal therapy partially restored ecological and functional balance, supporting oral health as a modifiable driver of systemic microbial homeostasis.

Treponema pallidum Protein Tp0136 Induces Spheroidization of Vascular Endothelial Cells, Resulting in Widened Intercellular Junctions and Enhanced Vascular Permeability

open access: yesSmall Science
The Treponema pallidum membrane protein Tp0136 facilitates Treponema pallidum dissemination, and the permeability of vasculature is intricately linked to the density of the vascular endothelial barrier, which is strongly associated with the morphology of

Treponema pallidum protein Tp0136 promotes angiogenesis to facilitate the dissemination of Treponema pallidum

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections
The incompletely eliminated Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum) during primary syphilis chancre infection can result in the progression of secondary, tertiary, or latent syphilis in individuals, suggesting that T. pallidum has successfully evaded the immune

Tomographic reconstruction of treponemal cytoplasmic filaments reveals novel bridging and anchoring components [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
An understanding of the involvement of bacterial cytoplasmic filaments in cell division requires the elucidation of the structural organization of those filamentous structures.

Matrix Metalloproteinases in Periodontal and Peri‐Implant Diseases: Contribution to Their Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Treatment

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) across the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapeutics of periodontal and peri‐implant diseases. Microbial and host stimuli trigger MMP activation leading to extracellular matrix breakdown, point‐of‐care aMMP‐8 detection aids diagnosis, and adjunctive or AI‐assisted ...
