Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Cardiovascular Risk Factor Control in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and New Trial Evidence

open access: yesEuropean Medical Journal, 2017
The micro and macrovascular complications of Type 2 diabetes mellitus are influenced by several well described cardiovascular risk factors such as hyperglycaemia, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, and smoking alongside age, sex, and diabetes duration ...

Apricot cultivars approved for production in Chelyabinsk Province

open access: yesТруды по прикладной ботанике, генетике и селекции
Background. The life in an industrial region, with hard labor and harmful emissions from enterprises, is far from healthy, so high-quality and vitamin-rich diets are needed. Apricot fruits are considered among the most beneficial for human health, due to

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Availability of Clinical Trial Data From Industry‐Sponsored Cardiovascular Trials

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2016
BackgroundIndustry‐sponsored clinical trials produce high‐quality data sets that can be used by researchers to generate new knowledge. We assessed the availability of individual participant‐level data (IPD) from large cardiovascular trials conducted by ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

In medicine today – Cancer and the prorogation of clinical reality in favour of probabilistic outcomes

open access: yesForum of Clinical Oncology
How essential is the randomised trial in cancer therapeutics? Is it conceivable that prospective randomised clinical trials in cancer medicine could, one day, safely be abandoned in favour of Phase II studies supplemented with real-world data from cancer

Consistent financial practices at community sites improve performance and sustainability: A case study of validated practices at a community clinical research site

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Translational Science
Community research site finances continue to emerge as substantial topics of concern. Financial management solutions are possible; however, they must be continuously managed and incorporated to realize optimal business quality.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
