Tribochemistry as an Alternative Synthesis Pathway [PDF]

open access: yesLubricants, 2020
While reactions driven by mechanical force or stress can be labeled mechanochemical, those specifically occurring at a sliding interface inherit the name tribochemical, which stems from the study of friction and wear: tribology.

Tribochemistry of Bulk Zinc Metaphosphate Glasses [PDF]

open access: yesTribology Letters, 2018
Zinc polyphosphate glasses are the principal component of the antiwear tribofilms formed on steel surfaces in the presence of additives, such as zinc dialkyldithiophosphates.

Perspectives of 2D MXene Tribology. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Mater, 2023
The past two years have witnessed increased experimental and theoretical efforts toward studying MXenes’ mechanical and tribological properties when used as lubricant additives, reinforcement phases in composites, or solid lubricant coatings. The most promising results in MXene tribology are summarized, future important problems to be pursued further ...

Friction and Wear Behavior of Laser-Induced Graphene Structures on Polyimide Films. [PDF]

open access: yesSmall Sci
This study presents an investigation into the friction and wear behavior of laser‐induced graphene (LIG). Introducing line patterns of different sizes with this laser scribing approach results in a lowering of the coefficient of friction. The gradual wear of the protruding LIG patterns and the formation of wear debris are explored.

Self-Lubricating Tribo-Catalytic Activity of 2D High Entropy Alloy Nanoflakes. [PDF]

open access: yesSmall
The 2D high entropy alloy (HEA) of (MoWNbTaV)0.2S2 is synthesized and investigated through ball‐on‐disk friction experiments. The unprecedentedly low average coefficients of friction (0.076) and wear rates (10−9 mm3 (N∙m)−1) under high contact pressures (0.936 GPa) within ambient conditions are demonstrated.

Nondestructive tribochemistry-assisted nanofabrication on GaAs surface. [PDF]

open access: yesSci Rep, 2015
AbstractA tribochemistry-assisted method has been developed for nondestructive surface nanofabrication on GaAs. Without any applied electric field and post etching, hollow nanostructures can be directly fabricated on GaAs surfaces by sliding a SiO2 microsphere under an ultralow contact pressure in humid air.

Se Nanopowder Conversion into Lubricious 2D Selenide Layers by Tribochemical Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 35, Issue 42, October 19, 2023., 2023
A simple sprinkling of Se nanopowders onto sliding Mo and W thin films leads to the tribochemical in operando formation of lubricious 2D selenides. Due to the thermal and vacuum stability of the Se nanopowders they can be used to replenish sliding components with solid lubricants, avoiding the long‐lasting problem of transition metal ...

A New Method of AFM‐Based Nanolithography Using Frequency Enhanced Electrochemical Pressure Solution Etching

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 8, Issue 10, May 25, 2023., 2023
This work details a new method of atomic force microscopy (AFM)‐based lithography which utilizes a new chemical phenomenon of “frequency enhanced electrochemical pressure solution” (a.k.a. “FEEPS”) that greatly enhances the rate of silica dissolution under an oscillating AFM tip undergoing tapping in pure water.

The Mechanochemical Synthesis and Activation of Carbon‐Rich π‐Conjugated Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 9, Issue 19, July 6, 2022., 2022
Mechanochemistry allows the manipulation of chemical bonds by force as unique stimulus to impart functionality and bottom‐up bond formation. This allows the synthesis and activation of π‐conjugated carbon‐rich materials that would otherwise not be accessible.

Release of Molecular Cargo from Polymer Systems by Mechanochemistry

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, Volume 28, Issue 17, March 22, 2022., 2022
Mechanochemical design: The incorporation of force‐responsive groups, known as mechanophores, into macromolecular systems has provided access to responsive behaviours and enabled sophisticated functions of the resulting structures and advanced materials.
