Uptake of Tributyltin into Willow Trees

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2004
Organotins have been used world-wide as antifoulants in ship paints. Repeatedly, severe effects on aquatic species have resulted. The use of organotins for this purpose was ruled out, and dumping of contaminated harbor sludge into the sea was prohibited.

Development of a biosensor for the detection of tributyltin

Environmental Toxicology, 2004
AbstractA biosensor (LUMISENS I), based on the inducible bioluminescence of the Escherichia coli strain TBT3 (Ec::luxAB TBT3), was developed for the detection of the biocide tributyltin. LUMISENS I was set up with a minibioreactor and additional equipment for growth monitoring and light acquisition. The 100‐mL minibioreactor has allowed us to establish

The Obesogen Tributyltin

2014
The obesogen hypothesis postulates the role of environmental chemical pollutants that disrupt homeostatic controls and adaptive mechanisms to promote adipose-dependent weight gain leading to obesity and metabolic syndrome complications. One of the most direct molecular mechanisms for coupling environmental chemical exposures to perturbed physiology ...

Tributyltin and triphenyltin uptake by lettuce

Journal of Environmental Management, 2009
This paper provides quantitative information on the transfer of TBT (tributyltin) and TPhT (triphenyltin) from sludged soil to cultivated lettuce. The effect of their initial concentrations in the soil (varying from 20 to 50 microg(Sn)kg(-1) for each triorganotin), sludge amount (between 1% and 9%), and cultivation duration (32-54 days) was evaluated ...

Effect of the fungicides tributyltin acetate and tributyltin chloride on multilamellar liposomes: fluorescence studies

Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1991
The influence of tri-n-butyltin acetate (TBTA) and tri-n-butyltin chloride (TBTC) on the physico-chemical state of charged and neutral phospholipids was investigated using multilamellar liposomes. The thermal dependence of steady state fluorescence polarization of DPH and its charged derivative TMA-DPH was recorded.

Tributyltin

1996
This authoritative volume reviews the environmental chemistry and toxicological effects of a marine pollutant of exceptional potency, tributyltin (TBT), and outlines the international response to control TBT. TBT compounds have been widely utilized in marine anti-fouling paint formulations to obtain increased fuel efficiencies and long lifetimes for ...

Tributyltin and public policy

Environmental Impact Assessment Review, 1989
Abstract Since the 1970s, paints containing tributyltin have been used on the hulls of boats to inhibit the attachment of barnacles and other sea life. Findings in France and Great Britain that tributyltin was harming nontarget organisms prompted restrictions on its use in several European countries in the early 1980s. After warnings by US scientists

Fate of tributyltin in a created tidal wetland

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 2002
Abstract The ability of Spartina alterniflora to degrade tributyltin (TBT) in contaminated dredge spoils was investigated in a created wetland at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Concentrations of TBT up to 250 ng/g did not inhibit S. alterniflora growth over a 16-month period.

Tributyltin isothiocyanate and isocyanide

Australian Journal of Chemistry, 1964
Infrared evidence has been used to demonstrate that tributyltin isothiocyanate is formed when certain tributyltin compounds are reacted with inorganic thiocyanates or thiourea. Molecular refraction data supporting this contention are also reported.    The preparation of tributyltin isothiocyanate by several different methods and of ...
