Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation for Disorders of Consciousness: A Narrative Review of Potential Mechanisms, Clinical Evidence, and Future Perspectives

open access: yesCNS Neuroscience &Therapeutics, Volume 32, Issue 10, October 2026.
Preclinical studies indicate that Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (TNS) treats Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) by activating neural pathways that promote the release of orexin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Additionally, TNS modulates cerebral hemodynamics and immunoregulation to enhance consciousness in experimental animals.

Migraine in Older Adults: Age‐Related Clinical Features From the Italian RICe Registry

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neurology, Volume 33, Issue 10, October 2026.
This multicentre study of 3477 patients from 30 Italian headache centres identified distinct age‐related patterns in migraine. Older adults more frequently presented with chronic migraine, higher monthly migraine frequency, lower pain intensity, and medication‐overuse headache, as well as distinct trigger and preventive treatment patterns.

Trait- and Frequency-Dependent Dysfunctional Habituation to Trigeminal Nociceptive Stimulation in Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgias

open access: yes, 2018
We investigated whether the stimulation frequency, the pain phases and different diagnoses of trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs) may influence the habituation to pain. We studied the habituation of the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR) R2 responses at

Cancer‐related pain: A bidirectional modulator of cancer progression

open access: yesClinical and Translational Medicine, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
CRP and tumour progression engage in a dynamic, bidirectional circuit mediated by multiple mechanisms involving neuroimmunology and cancer ‐neuroscience. Analgesic interventions may affect tumour progression, while anticancer therapies can influence pain. Targeting pain in cancer may have promising therapeutic value in cancer progression.

The Prevalence of Neuropathic Pain in Multiple Sclerosis—A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis Using the NeuPSIG Algorithm

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Pain, Volume 30, Issue 8, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disorder frequently leading to neuropathic pain. Due to the neurodegenerative nature, the diagnosis of neuropathic pain remains challenging. A grading system has been developed providing an overview of diagnostic certainty (i.e., possible, probable and definite). Since no

The Treatment of Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgias: An Overview

open access: yes, 2019
Trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs) are primary headaches that include cluster headache (CH), paroxysmal hemicrania (PH), and short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks (SUNHAs) with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) or cranial

Migraine: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Pathophysiology, and Treatment

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2026.
Migraine is a highly prevalent, female‐predominant, and disabling brain disorder shaped by genetic susceptibility, hormonal influences, modifiable attack factors, and comorbidity‐related progression. This review integrates current evidence on migraine epidemiology, phase‐specific neurovascular and neuroglial mechanisms, including CGRP signaling and ...

MR Tractography in Short Lasting Unilateral Neuralgiform Headache Attacks with Conjunctival Injection and Tearing (SUNCT) Patients: Case Reports

open access: yes, 2017
Background. Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attack with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) is one of the trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias where neurovascular compression was detected in neuroimaging in recent ...
