SST–convection relation over tropical oceans
International Journal of Climatology, 2012AbstractAccording to current knowledge, convection over the tropical oceans increases with sea surface temperature (SST) from 26 to 29 °C, and at SSTs above 29 °C, it sharply decreases. Our research shows that it is only over the summer warm pool areas of Indian and west Pacific Oceans (monsoon areas) where the zone of maximum SST is away from the ...

Tropical Deep Convection and Ozone Formation
Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1997Theoretical studies, aircraft, and space-borne measurements show that deep convection can be an effective conduit for introducing reactive surface pollutants into the free troposphere. The chemical consequences of convective systems are complex. For example, sensitivity studies show potential for both enhancement and diminution of ozone formation ...

Convective Fluxes in Tropical Cyclones
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1977Abstract Vertical fluxes of mass, static energy and angular momentum in tropical cyclones and their environments are analyzed using composite rawinsonde data. Cumulus-scale eddy fluxes are derived using a spectral cloud model incorporating the effects of downdrafts, overshoot cooling, multiple-level cloud detrainment and ice-phase transitions.

Theory of tropical moist convection
2020These lecture notes cover the theory of tropical moist convection. Many simplifications are made along the way, like neglecting rotation and treating the atmosphere as a two-dimensional fluid or even reducing the atmosphere to two columns. We can gain an immense amount of insight into the real atmosphere by studying these toy models, including answers ...

Convective processes and tropical atmospheric circulations
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1994AbstractThis paper presents calculations of an idealized large‐scale tropical circulation driven solely by sea‐surface‐temperature anomalies. Cumulus clouds are represented by a minimal convective parametrization that includes a highly simplified representation of cloud microphysical effects.

Coastal Convection in the Tropics
2017Weather and climate models produce large rainfall errors in tropical coastal regions where the rain is often shaped by land-sea interaction like sea-breeze circulation systems. However, it has been difficult to quantify the contribution of these meso-scale interactions to the overall local rainfall.

Numerical studies of tropical convection
2013Idealized numerical model experiments are presented to investigate the convective generation of vertical vorticity in a tropical depression. The calculations are motivated by observations made during the recent PREDICT field experiment to study tropical cyclogenesis, and by a desire to understand the aggregation of vorticity debris produced by deep ...

Thermodynamic Classification of Tropical Convective Soundings
Monthly Weather Review, 1974Abstract Soundings from a land tropical experiment (VIMHEX II) are classified according to local area rainfall into four regimes depicting the transition from dry to highly disturbed days. The thermodynamic structure for each of the four regimes is presented, and the implications for convective parameterization theories and the prediction problem are ...

Diurnal Variations of Tropical Oceanic Convection
2016In this chapter, diurnal variation of tropical rainfall is analyzed by calculating the diurnal composite of water vapor and heat budgets. The theoretical analysis of condensation and deposition shows that diurnal variation of temperature is primarily responsible for that of condensation and deposition.
