Molecular Diagnosis and Prevalence of Trypanosoma vivax (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) in Buffaloes and Ectoparasites in the Brazilian Amazon Region

open access: yesJournal of Medical Entomology, 2020
AbstractTrypanosoma vivax Ziemann is a parasite that affects both wild and domestic ungulates and is transmitted mechanically via tabanids and other blood-sucking insects in the Americas. A total of 621 blood samples from water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis (Linnaeus) (Artiodactyla: Bovidae), and 184 ectoparasite samples (Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius ...

Leishmaniasis Transmission Risk at the Forest‐Peridomestic Interface in an Area of Southern Sinaloa, Mexico: Entomological, Molecular, and Climatic Evidence

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania spp. and transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies, affects almost 1,000,000 people annually across more than 90 countries. In Mexico, growing evidence of locally acquired transmission in northwestern states makes ecoepidemiological work increasingly urgent.

The P2X7 Receptor and Its Relation to Neglected Tropical Diseases: Focusing on Chagas Disease

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that can lead to severe cardiac complications, including chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy. While NTDs are caused by a variety of pathogens—such as protozoa, bacteria, viruses, and helminths, Chagas disease remains underexplored, particularly regarding host immune responses.

Eprinomectin Inhibits Leishmania by Inducing Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Cell Cycle Arrest

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Introduction Leishmaniasis remains a significant global health challenge, with current therapies often hampered by toxicity, resistance, and high cost. In this study, we investigated the antileishmanial potential of eprinomectin, a veterinary macrocyclic lactone, to address unmet therapeutic needs.

Urban landscapes tend to increase the presence of pathogenic protozoa, microsporidia and viruses, but likely decrease the abundance of viruses in wild bees and wasps

open access: yesInsect Science, Volume 32, Issue 6, Page 1911-1925, December 2025.
• The bees Anthophora plumipes and Osmia cornuta had a higher occurrence probability of the neogregarine protozoan Apicystis bombi in more fragmented urban areas.• In the bee Halictus scabiosae and wasp Polistes dominula, hotter urban areas increased the likelihood of occurrence of viruses.• The viruses were found to be replicative in the samples, and ...

Isoenzyme clustering of Trypanosomatidae Colombian populations.

open access: yesThe American journal of tropical medicine and hygiene, 2002
Thirty-six Trypanosomatidae stocks isolated from various hosts and geographical areas in Colombia and 7 others from Bolivia, Chile, Honduras and Panama have been surveyed by Multilocus Enzyme Electrophoresis (MLEE). Part of the Colombian stocks were previously characterized by morphology and biological behavior as belonging to Trypanosoma cruzi and ...

Potential geographic displacement of Chagas disease vectors under climate change

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 39, Issue 4, Page 709-717, December 2025.
As a result of modelling the potential distribution of 55 triatomine species in the Neotropical region, with climate change projected for up to 2050, we found no significant changes. With climate change projected for up to 2080 in the Neotropical region, we see a significant potential for the migration of 55 species of triatomines towards the Amazon ...

Trypanosomatidae diseases: from the current therapy to the efficacious role of trypanothione reductase in drug discovery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
According to World Health Organization (WHO), trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis are the most challenging among the neglected tropical diseases. Comparative studies between Leishmania spp and Trypanosoma cruzi have been conducted aiming to find a broad ...

Natural Products from Mexican Medicinal Plants as Promising Trypanocidal Drugs

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 10, Issue 37, October 6, 2025.
Chagas disease (American Trypanosomiasis) is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. Worldwide it is one of the seventeen neglected tropical diseases. There is a need of new drugs. This review assesses the literature (2012‐2024) of secondary metabolites isolated from Mexican plants active against this parasite.

Mitogenome sequence of a Black Sea isolate of the kinetoplastid Bodo saltans

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2018
We obtained the mitogenome sequence of a Black Sea isolate of the kinetoplastid Bodo saltans. This sequence consists of two contigs totaling 24,925 bp and encodes ten protein-coding genes, one conserved ORF and one rRNA gene.
