Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

The structure of a three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer

open access: yes, 1993
The three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer is shown to have a self-consistent two-layer asymptotic structure in the limit of large Reynolds number.

Paramagnetic Rim Lesions Are Associated With Trans‐Synaptic Degeneration of the Visual Pathway in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Retrograde trans‐synaptic degeneration (rTSD) from posterior visual pathway lesions in multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by hemi‐macular ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thinning and contralateral visual field loss.

An improved turbulent boundary layer inflow condition, applied to the simulation of jets in cross-flow [PDF]

open access: yes
The jet acting perpendicular to a cross-flow boundary layer is a commonly studied complex turbulent flow. Our research was motivated by their potential application in separation delay devices, where jets can be used to produce streamwise vortices in a ...

Particles turbulence interactions in boundary layers [PDF]

open access: yesZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2005
AbstractTurbulent dispersed flows in boundary layers are crucial in a number of industrial and environmental applications. In most applications, the key information is space distribution of particles which is known to be strongly non‐homogeneous. Specifically, inertial particles distribute preferentially avoiding strong vortical regions and segregating

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Remarks on the Equilibrium Turbulent Boundary Layer [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1957
Two similarity laws are known for the mean-velocity profile in a turbulent boundary layer with constant pressure. These are Prandtl's law of the wall and Karman's momentum-defect law. The first law has recently been generalized empirically to flows with arbitrary pressure gradient by Ludwieg and Tillmann, and the second law to a certain class of ...

Interaction Layer Between a Turbulent Boundary Layer and Free-Stream Turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The interaction between a turbulent free-stream and a turbulent boundary layer is investigated through particle image velocimetry measurements. An ‘interaction layer’ located between \(0.12 \le y/\delta \le 0.19\), at the end of the log layer, is identified whereby the kinetic energy in this layer describes the flow above it. Conditional averages about

Plasma EV Proteomics Identifies ECM Remodeling and Inflammatory Proteins LUM and C7 as Candidate Biomarkers in FSHD

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one of the most debilitating and common muscular dystrophies. Despite its severity, no approved therapy exists for FSHD patients. However, several therapeutic candidates are currently under development, and some have recently entered clinical trials, marking the need for reliable ...

A Synthesis Approach for Reproducing the Response of Aircraft Panels to Turbulent Boundary Layer Excitations

open access: yes, 2010
Random wall-pressure fluctuations due to a Turbulent-Boundary Layer (TBL) are a feature of the air flow over an aircraft fuselage under cruise conditions, creating undesirable effects such as cabin noise annoyance.
