Universals and cultural variation in turn-taking in conversation [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2009
Informal verbal interaction is the core matrix for human social life. A mechanism for coordinating this basic mode of interaction is a system of turn-taking that regulates who is to speak and when. Yet relatively little is known about how this system varies across cultures.

On The Analysis of Prosodic Turn-Taking Cues [PDF]

open access: yesIntonation in Discourse, 2018
When a conversation breaks down, the problem can often be traced to a failure in the turn-taking procedure, i.e. the smooth interchange of speaking turns between conversational partners.

Inhibition within a premotor circuit controls the timing of vocal turn-taking in zebra finches [PDF]

open access: yesNat Commun, 2020
Vocal turn-taking is a fundamental organizing principle of human conversation but the neural circuit mechanisms that structure coordinated vocal interactions are unknown.

Interaction Histories and Short-Term Memory: Enactive Development of Turn-Taking Behaviours in a Childlike Humanoid Robot [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophies, 2019
In this article, an enactive architecture is described that allows a humanoid robot to learn to compose simple actions into turn-taking behaviours while playing interaction games with a human partner.

Adaptability and Diversity in Simulated Turn-taking Behaviour

open access: greenArtificial Life, 2003
Turn-taking behavior is simulated in a coupled-agents system. Each agent is modeled as a mobile robot with two wheels. A recurrent neural network is used to produce the motor outputs and to hold the internal dynamics. Agents are developed to take turns on a two-dimensional arena by causing the network structures to evolve.

Variability of signal sequences in turn-taking exchanges induces agency attribution in 10.5-mo-olds [PDF]

open access: yesProc Natl Acad Sci U S A, 2019
Significance We demonstrate that 10.5-mo-old infants—before understanding the symbolic contents encoded by unfamiliar signals—can recognize turn-taking interactions that serve communicative information transmission based on detecting variability in the ...

Turn-Taking Between Provisioning Parents: Partitioning Alternation

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2019
How parents negotiate over parental care is a central issue in evolutionary biology because it affects the evolutionary outcome of sexual conflict.

The evolution of cooperative turn-taking in animal conflict [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2011
Background A fundamental assumption in animal socio-ecology is that animals compete over limited resources. This view has been challenged by the finding that individuals might cooperatively partition resources by "taking turns".

TURN TAKING STRATEGIES IN POLITICAL DEBATES [PDF]

open access: yesANAPHORA: Journal of Language, Literary and Cultural Studies, 2020
This article reports on two separate studies—Natalia (2019) and Subekti (2019)—on  communication mechanism in political debates. Specifically these studies focus on turn taking strategies adopted in political debates by political figures during their campaign for presidency or in dealing with specific issues.
