Influence of horizontal alignment elements on operating speed of vehicles on two-lane highways

open access: yesFrontiers in Future Transportation
Earlier studies acknowledged that the design speed does not principally assure consistency in the design of highway geometric elements. Methodologies for estimating operating speeds are limited to specific or local traffic conditions and design standards,

Estimating passing sight distances for overtaking truck platoons – Calibration and validation using VISSIM

open access: yesInternational Journal of Transportation Science and Technology, 2022
Two-lane highways comprise a substantial proportion of the nation’s highways. One of their critical aspects is the passing sight distance (PSD), which is the minimum distance required for executing a safe passing maneuver using the opposing travel lane ...

Public Perceptions of Wisconsin’s Pavements and Tradeoffs in Pavement Improvement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Findings are reported from Phase II of a three-phase pooled-fund project in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota to determine perceptions of drivers regarding pavement of rural two-lane highways.

Decision-Making for Automated Vehicles Using a Hierarchical Behavior-Based Arbitration Scheme

open access: yes, 2020
Behavior planning and decision-making are some of the biggest challenges for highly automated systems. A fully automated vehicle (AV) is confronted with numerous tactical and strategical choices.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DOUBLE DEEP Q-NETWORK AND PROXIMAL POLICY OPTIMIZATION FOR LANE-KEEPING IN AUTONOMOUS DRIVING [PDF]

open access: yesProblems of Information Society
Lane-keeping is a vital function in autonomous driving, important for vehicle safety, stability, and adherence to traffic flow. The intricacy of lane-keeping control resides in balancing precision and responsiveness across varied driving ...

Comparison of free flow speed estimation models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Free flow speed (FFS) is the drivers’ desired speed on roadways at low traffic volume and absence of traffic control devices whose determination is a fundamental step in the analysis of two-lane highways.

A Survey of Localization Methods for Autonomous Vehicles in Highway Scenarios

open access: yesSensors, 2021
In the context of autonomous vehicles on highways, one of the first and most important tasks is to localize the vehicle on the road. For this purpose, the vehicle needs to be able to take into account the information from several sensors and fuse them ...

Measuring Performance on Two-Lane Highways: Empirical Investigation [PDF]

open access: yesTransportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2017
This paper presents an empirical investigation into several performance measures for operational analysis on two-lane highways. The performance measures investigated are average travel speed, average travel speed to free-flow speed, percent followers, followers flow, followers density, percent impeded, impeded flow, and impeded density.

Evaluation of speed–flow characteristics on two-lane highways with mixed traffic

open access: yesTransport, 2017
The HCM (Highway Capacity Manual 2010) classifies two-lane rural highway that passes through developed areas as ‘Class III’ and suggests using Percent Free-Flow Speed (PFFS) as performance measure to define Level Of Service (LOS).

Origin of synchronized traffic flow on highways and its dynamic phase transitions

open access: yes, 1998
We study the traffic flow on a highway with ramps through numerical simulations of a hydrodynamic traffic flow model. It is found that the presence of the external vehicle flux through ramps generates a new state of recurring humps (RH).
