Exercise and Autonomic Cardiovascular Function—Insights From Spinal Cord‐Injured Humans: A Narrative Review

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The cardiovascular response to acute exercise is mediated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) control mechanisms that modulate vascular resistance to support blood pressure and ensure adequate blood flow to active muscles. These autonomic neurocirculatory control mechanisms include a feedforward mechanism, known as central command, and three

Cervical sympathetic block to reverse delayed ischemic neurological deficits after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

open access: yes, 2003
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a locoregional cervical sympathetic block to improve cerebral perfusion in patients suffering from cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid ...

Cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma: A case report [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Nerve tumors arising from the sympathetic chain are uncommon slow-growing tumors and represent a diagnosis challenge. Their malignant degeneration is rare. Definitive pre-operative diagnosis may be difficult as investigations are not usually helpful.

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Tumor Involving the Anterosuperior Mediastinum With a Rare c.147C>G Germline Mutation: A Case Report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder that affects multiple organ systems, most commonly the skin, peripheral nerves, and skeletal system. However, involvement of the anterior mediastinum is rare and has been sporadically reported in the literature.

Excess portal venous long-chain fatty acids induce syndrome X via HPA axis and sympathetic activation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We tested the hypothesis that excessive portal venous supply of long-chain fatty acids to the liver contributes to the development of insulin resistance via activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) and sympathetic system.

Persistent Post‐Traumatic Brain Injury Hiccups Unresponsive to Standard Agents: Resolution Associated With Levetiracetam Therapy

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Post‐traumatic hiccups are an uncommon but distressing complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI), often resistant to conventional pharmacological agents, and the underlying mechanism may involve central neurological disruption of inhibitory pathways rather than gastrointestinal or metabolic aetiologies. We report a male patient in his early

Neuroanatomy of Cervical Sympathetic Trunk: A Cadaveric Study

open access: yes, 2009
To reduce the risk of iatrogenic injury to sympathetic chain during anterior and anterolateral approaches to the cervical spine, its location has to be well defined and known by surgeons.

Different types of potassium transport linked to carbachol and γ-aminobutyric acid actions in rat sympathetic neurons [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
Carbachol and γ-aminobutyric acid depolarize mammalian sympathetic neurons and increase the free extracellular K+-concentration. We have used double-barrelled ion-sensitive microelectrodes to determine changes of the membrane potential and of the free ...

Melatonin Improves Cognitive Function and Suppresses Excessive Mitophagy in Rats With Vascular Dementia

open access: yesCNS Neuroscience &Therapeutics, Volume 32, Issue 9, September 2026.
CCH in BCCAO‐operated rats induces excessive hippocampal mitophagy and caspase‐3 upregulation. Two‐week daily melatonin treatment promotes CBF recovery, inhibits excessive mitophagy, and reduces caspase‐3 expression levels. These mechanisms may be associated with melatonin‐mediated amelioration of cognitive dysfunction in VaD rats.

Neurocardiology: Brain–Heart Interactions in the Heart

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2026.
The heart and brain maintain systemic homeostasis through bidirectional communication involving neural, biochemical, and mechanical pathways. Dysregulation of these pathways contributes to a spectrum of conditions involving heart–brain interactions, including Takotsubo syndrome, the epileptic heart, stroke–heart syndrome, heart failure, cardiac ...
