Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

Environmental salinity determines the specificity and need for tat-dependent secretion of the YwbN protein in bacillus subtilis [PDF]
Twin-arginine protein translocation (Tat) pathways are required for transport of folded proteins across bacterial, archaeal and chloroplast membranes. Recent studies indicate that Tat has evolved into a mainstream pathway for protein secretion in certain

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

A holin and an endopeptidase are essential for chitinolytic protein secretion in Serratia marcescens [PDF]
Pathogenic bacteria adapt to their environment and manipulate the biochemistry of hosts by secretion of effector molecules. Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic pathogen associated with healthcare-acquired infections and is a prolific secretor of ...

Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.

Large-scale identification of pathogenicity factors in "Bartonella" by signature-tagged mutagenesis [PDF]
Bartonellae are bacterial pathogens uniquely adapted to cause intraerythrocytic infection in their mammalian reservoir hosts. In the case of human-specific Bartonella bacilliformis and Bartonella quintana, the intraerythrocytic bacteremia leads to the ...

pH-responsive substrate switching in mycobacterial type VII ESX secretion
During infection, pathogenic mycobacteria reside within phagosomes of varying acidity based on the macrophage activation state. The ESX-1 secretion system (early secreted antigen 6 kilodaltons [ESAT-6] system 1) delivers protein virulence factors ...
